First Atlantic hurricane Arlene spotted by TIROS 6 satellite
The first Atlantic hurricane Arlene formed about 2200 miles southeast of Miami with estimated 100 mph winds. It was moving west-northwest at 16 mph with gale force winds extending up to 175 miles north and 75 miles south. The storm posed no land threat yet, and TIROS 6 successfully tracked it from near Africa toward the Caribbean. Esther, photographed in 1961, was the first hurricane identified by a satellite.
