Forecasters expect August rainfall to add 1.5 to 2 inches in Lubbock while year to date rainfall remains about 1.44 inches above normal. July was drier with 1.13 inches, but August is forecast to stay warm with highs in the 90s and lows in the 60s, continuing a slower decline into fall.
A cold front brought a brief cool snap on Monday morning but southerly winds return today. Showers are unlikely today and Wednesday with highs in the low to mid 90s. The extended forecast calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday. Sunshine totals around 11 hours today and Wednesday with humidity from 80 percent in the morning to 35 percent in the afternoon.
In Santa Barbara California a major air assault was planned to battle two fires north of a suburb damaged last week. The Lake Cachuma fire stretched 800 acres and is believed man caused while another near Mono Creek remained active. Three firefighters were injured and over 32 000 gallons of retardant had been dropped as crews prepared to reinforce lines.
The Associated Press reports a pleasant Monday across most of the northern half of the nation with sunny skies in the intermountain West and along the Rockies and Plains. High humidities and 90s shade the central and southern Atlantic and Gulf states, while thunderstorms form from Maine to Florida and in parts of Texas and California. Temperatures range from 50 at Crescent City and Sawyer AFB to 107 at Needles and Blythe. Andrew Jackson’s informal “kitchen cabinet” of advisors is noted briefly.
Typhoon Vera lashed Taiwan with 133 mph winds causing at least 25 deaths and widespread damage. Cranes toppled in Keelung, four of Kaohsiung harbor cranes destroyed earlier by Typhoon Thelma, and 79 freighters advised to seek other ports. Government mobilized troops for cleanup as offices closed for repairs.
