Record Heat Tops Lubbock as 106 Degree Day Ties August High

Lubbock reached 106 degrees Monday, a record for August and the first day of the month, nearing the all time high. Forecasters expected temperatures to ease to the upper 90s with little rainfall, while a thunderstorm chance lingered after late showers in Amarillo.

Growth of lake brings new travel and water plans to Panhandle

Shiny boats fill the greenish blue lake as residents flock to enjoy swimming skiing and picnicking. Inlets promise prime fishing while a resort near a high bluff is considered. Cities including Amarillo Borger Pampa Plainview Levelland Brownfield Slaton Tahoka O'Donnell and Lamesa align to receive aqueduct water, but none will have water until the system is ready likely not before 1968. The Lubbock water plant is slated for completion by next June with testing and filling adding months, aiming for a January 1968 start, while the two stage treatment plant northeast of Lubbock remains on schedule.
