A Friday week note reports a two alarm blaze starting in Ben's Cafe at 913 Thirteenth that scorched offices on Thirteenth and Texas Ave. Injured workers Liennee Woodrow Quinn and W B Williams were treated at Lubbock General hospital after a second explosion toppled part of the cafe wall. West Texas OPA District to get new head from West Texas
A West Texan likely from Lubbock will replace Howard R. Gholson as director of the West Texas district of the Office of Price Administration. J. Bryan Miller, OPA executive officer for the six state Dallas-centered region, arrived from Dallas to meet Gholson who resigned earlier. Miller said a qualified successor will be chosen with no policy changes expected and two resignations will be filled locally if possible. Gholson's resignation stems from policy differences between the 71 county district and Dallas regional offices. he leaves May 12 with the district to run temporarily until a permanent director is named.

The fourth class of combat veterans completes the intensive all weather instrument flying program at Lubbock Army Air Field and will return to bases nationwide to train others. A new sixth class arrives Sunday with most members present by Monday noon and work resuming Tuesday.
