An Odessa trucker crash sequence ends in a fire after police bar him from driving his truck due to no safety inspection sticker. A tow vehicle breaks away, the driverless truck strikes three cars and a gasoline pump, and sparks a fire ensue.
About 15 000 donated paperback books collected at Amarillo high schools were discarded in a garbage can over content concerns. Titles including A Texan Looks at Lyndon and Distortion by Design were thrown out by senior Charles Szalkowski, head of the Kes Club. Randy Hass, another senior and John Birch Society member, donated the books. The sanitation crew found three cases valued at about 450 dollars behind Szalkowski’s home Tuesday.
Three workers were missing and presumed dead after a massive explosion at an Army ammunition plant near Charleston Indiana. At least 40 others were injured as windows shattered and nearby buildings were damaged. Lawhead, an official, said the pickup crew went to obtain mortar powder at a magazine when the blast occurred. The magazine, an earth covered 11 foot structure near the southeast plant, was destroyed. Witnesses reported secondary fire and debris from planes but officials said no secondary explosion risk. The incident halted operations and prompted an investigation.
Weather front moving into the Texas Panhandle brings a cold blast and wind gusts as tornadoes flared in Mississippi and thunderstorms dampened the Southeast. Forecasters predict Northwest Texas temperatures from the mid 30s to mid 70s with a sharp drop after frontal passage.

In San Antonio police charged David Hausman son of Dr Robert Hausman with a daylight burglary at a residence on April 3 valued at about 10000 dollars. Officers recovered most of the loot a wooden chest in the youth's room and the father cooperated with investigators. Also charged were Peyureenord Bobbie Sue Howard and Bernard Navy Find.
A blast at the Gulf States asphalt plant in South Houston produced a bright red flash and tremors felt miles away. No injuries were reported as fire officials battled a blaze. fire chief said a kettle overheated and valves failed during the event.
R A Goodson president of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. visited Lubbock and met with employees and friends. He said he personally answers incoming calls to show courtesy and notes the town's dynamic economy, new buildings, Texas Tech growth, and rain prompted smiles. He cited about 1 million dollars in expansion and new buildings planned for Lubbock this year.
The division manager John Whitcomb will announce direct dialing for Lubbock as soon as possible. Goodson said plans call for increased installation of underground lines and that they are very much in favor of underground installations. See GOODSON Page 12.

Federal agents arrested four men in San Antonio on sealed indictments for a carijana smuggling racket. The suspects include Guillermo Caneda Carlos Hernandez and Gilbert Hernandez plus Rudolph Hare and an Air Force technical sergeant. Two more, including an Air Force master sergeant, were held in Chicago. A Mexican national faces conspiracy charges while two others are imprisoned. Bond set at 115600 in Bexar County jail.
Dorothy Joyner, 63, widow of a former Charlotte police chief, was sentenced to six months in jail after being convicted of discharging a shotgun into the head of a seven month old Great Dane owned by Mercer Blankenship Jr. The case noted a prior conviction for the same offense.
