The United Methodist Church reports after four years urging religion teaching in public schools on a non sectarian basis while excluding devotional exercises. The study supports church moral influence on public issues and conscientious objections to war, and suggests limited use of government funds for church related schools.
City Council authorized negotiations to purchase right of way for a long range traffic plan pairing Avenue X with University Avenue as one way routes. realtor Ray Chapman highlighted a McDonald's site option on 9th Street within the planned cut off area.
State and Nation section notes Texas GOP gubernatorial candidates diverge on support from Nixon and Reagan. World section reports Czech leaders urged to invite De Gaulle for a state visit.
US and South Vietnamese reports show last week had the highest allied combat deaths this year but fewer Communist deaths. About 287 Americans and 380 South Vietnamese were killed, while 1,899 Communists died. The A Shau Valley offensive involved 10,000 North Vietnamese in a 25 mile stretch with little resistance. Casualties for the year reach 5,707 Americans killed and 34,847 wounded. see Vietnam Page 10.

An escapee from a Bexar County prison killed FBI agent Douglas M. Price and then shot himself during a confrontation in San Antonio. The manhunt for Chubb followed the slaying of California grocer Frank Kohne, 71, whose murder and stolen car were linked to the case.

A sharp quake struck Santa Rosa California just before noon causing broken store windows and cracked walls. Seismology officials estimate 4.8 on the Richter scale with epicenter about 10 miles southeast of Santa Rosa. Mild shocks were reported in Mill Valley and Healdsburg but not in San Francisco.
The Soviet Union announced a new Cosmos launch and an unmanned flight with unclear orbiting purpose. Robert S. McNamara said the system could be combat ready in 1968 and that Cosmos tests were seen as cover for an orbital bomb capability.
President Johnson disclosed Arthur Goldberg will resign as U N ambassador and named former Undersecretary of State George W. Ball as successor. Ball, age 58, had previously left State as No 2 to return to law practice. Johnson called Ball a distinguished public servant who serves in advisory roles.
The Commerce Department data show March imports exceeded exports by 157.7 million, marking the first monthly trade deficit since 1963, as administration plans to cut the dollar outflow face a setback.
