Voters on November 3 1970 will decide liquor by the drink in Texas. The ballot hides the issue behind drink wet vote dry rhetoric and asks whether Texans should have mixed drinks in public establishments.
In Austin the Senate slowed a state minimum wage bill during a filibuster as backers expanded provisions to 1.95 per hour for most workers not covered by federal standards. A farm workers clause was rearranged after removal and reinserted, with farm wages set to follow a phased schedule ending at 1.60 in 1972. House approves splitting Parks and Wildlife into two boards.
A San Antonio police chief describes a youth rampage as well organized in coverage on page 6. The report notes suspected coordination and planning among participants as authorities pursue leads.
Ithaca police and 350 to 400 riot deputies surrounded Cornell University after the Afro-American Society pressed six month old disciplinary actions against five Negroes. NASA aims to keep lunar flights through 1972 with initial space station work and groundwork for late 1973 and beyond. The amended budget trims 131 million from the Johnson plan but adds 86 million for Saturn V moon rocket production and lunar lander efforts.
Three men suffered burns in a Tuesday night explosion and fire at the Industrial Metalcraft building near the airport. Henry Glover Husky, 50, of Manloca Road. Stout, 39, and Harvey Stotts, 42, were hospitalized after the blast. Firefighters responded and the incident left most damage confined to machinery.
Secretary Clifford M. Hardin said long term land retirement should be supplemented by other programs for several years. He noted any general retirement plan wouldn’t be the farm program’s sole focus and stressed year to year adjustments may still be needed. He did not rule out farm program legislation this year.
