In Lubbock area news the Texas Tech pole vaulter Larry Moon reports his Iberalan pole missing amid a roundup of items on page 1. Also notes hogs die in a blaze at swine pens at 65th and College Ave on page 18.
UBBOCK area residents dressed in spring attire joined Easter services then spilled into parks for picnics, egg hunts, golf, boating and swimming. Near perfect weather boosted attendance at churches and parks to record proportions, with thousands enjoying outdoor recreation.
President Johnson announced five new envoys including Joseph W. Barr as undersecretary of the Treasury. Hoyt to become ambassador to the Netherlands and McKinney to Jamaica. Henry Tasca named ambassador to Morocco and Merlyn Trued to permanent status in international affairs. Also noted: a Midland burglary caused about $3,500 loss at a Standard Oil warehouse as electric clock stopped. Local traffic and events covered with multiple notes.
Fidel Castro told Western reporters in Samaguey Cuba that the United States shows new signs of aggression against Cuba. He urged unity and pledged continued defense while linking Cuban aid to North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. He claimed the USSR and China differ but would act jointly against the United States in Asia.
The President and Mrs Lyndon B Johnson spent a sunny Easter Sunday in central Texas near their BJ Ranch attending Episcopal services in Blanco about 25 miles away. A new nuclear powered submarine for underwater exploration was announced along with Johnsons commendation of the Atomic Energy program as part of the day.
In New York City a man abandons his two children, Debbie and Chris, at a Brooklyn church rectory on Easter. Police find the youths, 2 and 3, after he leaves a note claiming he is very sick and pleading for their care. They are taken to the Children's Center as officers search for the father.
Five members of the Haddock family died when their car was struck by a Santa Fe freight train at a grade crossing near U S 60 in the Texas Panhandle town of Miami close to Pampa. The victims were A L Haddock Barbara Haddock their two young sons and Haddock's mother Bertha Mae Haddock 67 of Caddo Oklahoma. The wreck occurred about 5 30 p m as the east bound freight train pulled by diesel units passed through the town about 20 miles north west of Pampa.
The Answermoen Press reports a clash over Vietnam policy as Dean Rusk urges not suspending air strikes against North Vietnam while Senator J. W. Fulbright questions the approach. Fulbright suggests a possible temporary pause if a cease fire on both sides proves unattainable, though he doubts the tactic's effectiveness.
United Press reports longtime South Carolina Senator Olin D. Johnston died at 68 from pneumonia after abdominal surgery. He lapsed into coma Saturday and died Sunday at Providence Hospital with his wife and two daughters at his side. Funeral in Spartanburg, burial in Honea Path area. Born in a log cabin, he rose from mill work to a 43 year political career spanning liberal to conservative stances and championing workers.
The 11th annual Avalanche-Journal Home Show opened at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum with 7,900 visitors on opening day and 4,000 in two hours. The event runs 6 to 10 p m daily and 4 to 10 p m Saturday, admission free. Prize drawings award $500 in merchandise certificates daily to attendees. Sunday winners include Mrs Ray Wood and others from Dallas Shallowater Anton and Dallas residents.
A church prayer request gives thanks for Easter and asks to be wholly devoted to God. Mrs Coleman Cowan signs the note from 1811 Eighth Street, expressing gratitude for the gift of Thy Son and divine love.
