Giant US cargo plane crashes after takeoff in Newfoundland

A US C-124 Globe master with nine crew members on board crashed six miles from Earnest Harmon Air Force Base Newfoundland soon after departing from Dover Delaware en route to Lajes Azores. Radar contact was lost in fog with a 400 foot ceiling and two miles visibility. A board of inquiry will investigate the accident.

Castro accuses U S at Guantanamo of aiding Cuban rebels

President Castro charged U S authorities at Guantanamo Naval Base with aiding a counterrevolutionary group in eastern Cuba. He claimed U S planes sought contact with Manuel Beaton while the State Department denied the charges and said base personnel were not involved in Cuban politics. He said talks with U S officials could ease tensions and did not rule out a meeting with Eisenhower or Herter.
