Former President Gerald R Ford told the National Conference of Republican State Legislative Leaders that Republicans must expand their appeal beyond ideological purity to stay viable. He warned the party risks oblivion if it cannot gain more than its current four state legislatures.
Texas Tech football coach Steve Sloan was roasted at the 17th Gridiron Show in Lubbock where barbs from Paul Bear Bryant and Tom Landry headline a night supporting mass communications scholarships. The program featured skits about local politics and city projects at the Memorial Civic Center and concluded with a humorous recount of a county commissioner race and other light fare.
President Carter proposes full funding for eight dam and waterway projects in 1978 and partial funding for five after an eight week review. He keeps ongoing review for two and rejects 15, defusing anger in Congress while drawing mixed praise from environmental groups and some senators.
