Byron Peterson, 24, a student with security training, was charged with false imprisonment and impersonating an officer after arresting a service station attendant he mistook for a bank fugitive. He handcuffed the attendant, pulled a pistol, and later sought police help to complete the arrest.
The Paw Paw Grape and Wine Festival moves from the village to Van Buren County Youth Fairgrounds west of town after village leaders criticized past behavior. The nine year event lost village support citing rowdiness and drunkenness in Paw Paw.
Don Clark landed his single engine aircraft in the amusement park lot to save time and money. Police hauled him to headquarters for landing on private property. Clark said it was his second visit to Opryland and that next time he would call first.
New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin was aboard a Concorde diverted to Halifax Nova Scotia after the jet developed problems with its Number 4 engine. 71 passengers and nine crew were on the Paris to Washington leg. Breslin quipped he traveled 1300 miles per hour to reach Nova Scotia as another Concorde carried Washington bound travelers.

About 900 ERA opponents gathered on the Texas Capitol steps supporting Rep. Clay Smothers as his proposal to withdraw Texas approval of the federal amendment moved to a subcommittee. The House Constitutional Amendments committee rejected the measure 4-3 and sent it to a friendly subcommittee. Smothers warned Congress could usurp state powers while supporters argued ERA would extend civil rights. Local leaders and officials voiced opposition to Smothers and cited potential impacts on state and local governance.
The Texas Senate State Affairs Committee considered a substitute bill by Sen. Kent Hance to require motorist financial responsibility before vehicle registration. The measure would suspend drivers licenses and registrations after accidents if no proof of funds is shown, with appeals possible in court. Critics warn it could burden the poor and exclude uninsured motorists from Mexico areas.
