C W Ratliff dies at 67 veteran West Texas newsman
C W Ratliff veteran South Plains newsman died at about 10 p m Tuesday at St Mary of the Plains Hospital after surgery. He had a 47 year record chronicling West Texas moods, ending a 36 year run with The Avalanche Journal in 1960. He then led KCBD radio television news and remained News Director, honored in 1968 as Newsman of the Year. Ratliff was widely known among farmers city planners state lawmakers and national politicians. He inspired many messages from Governor Connally Telegrams poured in from leaders including George Mahon Ben Barnes Preston Smith and others. Mayor David Casey proclaimed C W Ratliff Day in Lubbock on Sept 2 1960.
