Floods isolate towns across Minnesota and Iowa

Snowpacks melted by heavy rains created record flood conditions across Minnesota and Iowa. Cherokee Iowa faced the worst flooding in 74 years with 50 to 65 blocks submerged and about 225 residents evacuated, while National Guardsmen assisted flood duties. Farm er electrocuted while freeing rabbit near pipe

Winifred West 26 a Floyd County area farmer was killed when a aluminum irrigation pipe touched a power line at a farm well near South Plains. He had just attempted to dislodge a rabbit and died at Lockney General Hospital. Survivors include his wife Joy and his parents John and Mrs West plus brothers and a sister. South Plains towns record heavy votes in local elections

In Spur Hart Floydada Roaring Springs Levelland and other South Plains towns voters produced sizable turnouts. Mayors Rickels Bradley Green and Cain won battles with incumbents while several council seats changed hands. In Lockney a major race saw Claude Brown defeat Huggins and Wilson chose a new mayor.

Satellite Kicks Off New Era

COMSAT launched its Early Bird satellite to create the first commercial space link between America and Europe. Initial reports called the orbit slightly below nominal while officials waited for precise measurements. The egg shaped temporary path aims toward a stationary orbit to switchboard up to 240 transatlantic calls and ocean spanned broadcasts.

Bids Aired On Project For Lubbock Water Plant

Bids were opened Tuesday for a northeast Lubbock water treatment plant to serve Lubbock and six South Plains cities. Butler Inc of Bryan submitted the low bid of 3,180,358, under the engineering estimate of 3,698,000, promising citizen savings. Sub-contractors include Anthony Plumbing and Amico Electric, with City Council to award the contract at its regular meeting Thursday. The plant sits east of the Municipal Airport along Quirt Ave and aims for May 1967 completion ahead of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority aqueduct delivery.
