A 19 degree frost chilled Lub bock and area with minor crop damage blamed on late planting. War Department seeks 122 9 million for 79 national cemeteries including Houston Fort Worth Lubbock. Local mayoral races and school board elections update the region amid postwar activity.
Jaycee-Ettes elected officers Thursday at Seaman hall with Leona Thomas as president and Sara Duval Marion Burdine as vice presidents Gladys Peters as secretary Mary Elizabeth Baker as treasurer and Elwanda Sams as reporter. Thirteen five attended and a May 1 dinner at Hilton hotel was planned with Oleta Gordon chairing the hostess committee.
The South Plains Dahlia Society gathered at 2009 Twenty-third in the Ken non home Thursday night. Mrs. H. S. Weiss spoke on mistakes in raising dahlias and E. C. Pool reminded members to donate dahlia bulbs to Milam's orphanage next week. Others present were H. S. Weiss, Dr. and Mrs. J. C. Anderson, Mrs. Lillian Slay and Mrs. Pool.
The Posey Home Demonstration club met at Mrs. J. I. Cran’s home for a program on Grow Beauty Around and a plant exchange with refreshments for Mesdames Onroe Brieger Sam Gentry Kyle Hart Lee Wood Jim Sain Tommy Johnson Benton Patterson Jess Shaffer T. F. Sager Wesley Gentry Willie Wilkie O. R. Patterson Buck Craig and visitors Miss Irene Gentry Mrs F A Klein Schmidt of Lubbock. Mrs Chester Gilmore hosted Becton Demonstration club for Legislatively Speaking with Mesdames L D Rogers Robert Collier and W J Robbins. D O Johnson gave a counch report and Mrs Collier led a group game. Attending were Mesdames N A Hunt S A Johnston Lon Lincecum R L Kelly R L Faith Ben Bearden and visitors Mesdames Truitt Joe Becton E J King Ray Ferguson. Next meeting set for April 18 at the Becton school.
Musicianship examinations sponsored by the South Plains Music Teachers Association began Friday at First Methodist Church and will continue today. Judge E Cyde Whitlock of Fort Worth presides. About three hundred children participate with Miss Mary Dunn as local chairman and Mrs. David Lea as association president.
Mrs. C. E. Newton directed a program for the Liberty Study club held at the home of Mrs. A. A. O’Bryant on Wednesday afternoon. Bible quotations were given for roll call and talks were presented by Mesdames O. A. Cocks and R. P. Onstott. Other attendees included Mesdames A. R. Everett J. McCreary and J. O. Everett.
Rev. A. W. Hall led a weekly prayer service for men overseas held at the home of Misses Mae and Vera Murfee at 1923 Fourteenth Street on Thursday night.
On April 7 1948 the building committee of the cooperative white board discussed securing more adequate housing and equipment for the negro nursery school. Donations are being received from church women's societies and individuals. equipment lists and delivery details were announced.
The Veterans Administration announced plans to open a Lubbock contact unit to assist South Plains veterans. Texas HQ in Waco will set up the office once space is available, starting with an administrator and clerk, expanding as needed. The move follows efforts by the American Legion post and was presented at the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.
Galveston April 6 Col. Arthur G Salisbury 28 year veteran fighter pilot was named commanding officer of the Galveston Army Air Field replacing Lt. Col. O H Rigley Jr who has been transferred. Operations at the field recently shifted from bomber to fighter training.
Walter Y. Wells, secretary of the Lubbock county Agricultural Conservation association, said 1 205 checks totaling 178 753 14 dollars have been issued to Lubbock county farmers for 1944 soil building practices. About half of eligible farmers have received checks. the rest will arrive within two weeks. President Jimmie Wilson presided at a luncheon where the Dayton trophy for activity was shown. Funeral services are set for Louie M. Ares in Slaton with burial at Slaton cemetery.
In Mexico City on April 6 Argentine Minister Adolfo N Calvo described Argentines as somewhat cool toward politics. He predicted upcoming elections would be less agitated than in Peru or Chile due to the nation’s stable economic life. He claimed no political prisoners in Patagonia and that opposition exiles had left voluntarily and could return.
The Lubbock Independent School District board seeks a $250000 cash sale of a Thirteenth street Central Ward property to Fisher & Fisher of Dallas with a 1000 option payment and 1 percent annual rental if needed. The buyer group, possibly Sears Roebuck & Co, would total about $500000 with related costs.
Dr. Harry L. Kent announces a qualifying Army Specialized Training test for male U S citizens aged 17 between Oct 1 1944 and Aug 31 1945. The exam runs 8:30 a m to 12 noon Thursday in room 210 admin building with strict entry cutoff at 9 am. Candidates must meet age and education requirements and bring two sharpened pencils and an eraser.
The fourth annual Lubbock County Livestock Show starts in Slaton with events at 10 am and judging by Ray C. Mowery at 1 30 pm. A calf scramble follows for 4 H and FFA members, offering about 250 in cash and 175 in war bond awards.
A typical sheep produces about nine pounds of wool during shearing, reflecting standard fleece output for farm flocks.
A petition for reorganization of Dalby Motor Freight Lines, Inc. was filed in Fort Worth before Federal District Judge T. Whitfield Davidson. Hearing set for May 21 in the Lubbock division, with court supervision permitting continued operations until then. Crenshaw Dupree Milam of Lubbock filed the petition. W. D. Benson Jr. is president. Arno Dalby sold ownership to other stockholders on November 16.
Funeral services were held for Dr George L Lewis 63 prominent San Angelo ranchman and physician who died of a heart attack in a local hospital. Lt Jack Lewis Navy chaplain and former assistant pastor of Lubbock First Presbyterian church rushed to San Angelo by plane after learning of his father’s illness. Surviving are his widow and a daughter Mrs Blake V Duncan of San Angelo.
President Roosevelt will speak by radio on April 13 to 350 Jefferson day dinners nationwide to raise funds for the 1946 congressional campaign. Vice President Truman and Navy Secretary Forrestal will also speak. The 30 minute program starts at 8 30 p m central war time on NBC and other networks.
