The Associated Press reports prices for meat and staples dropped from the first shopping day of the month to a month later as new price ceilings and enforcement affect markets. The check covers hamburger meat pork and other items including eggs and frankfurters across multiple cities.
Mrs. John Murphy of Lubbock wife of Capt. John Murphy missing in action and later reported a prisoner said she believes other POWs suffered greatly and rejects Hanoi accusations that their suffering is exaggerated. In Austin the House approved campaign finance measures with amendments and sent them toward the Senate. Momentary delay on abortion related bills followed, as subcommittee backed a consent based framework for minors seeking contraception while delaying sterilization and abortion legislation. Representative Tim Von Dohlen urged a substitute to bar abortions in state funded hospitals and criminalize late term abortion.
Floodwaters along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers threaten St Louis area with a crest near 40.5 feet the highest in 129 years. Damage estimates top 19 to 25 million across about one million acres from Hannibal Missouri to Cairo Illinois with thousands displaced and farms at risk. In Florida the Gold Coast suffers a massive blackout as guards deploy metal detectors and dry ice firms see demand rise.
