A 970 pound prototype space patrol craft SNAP-10A conducted a key test after its satellite Snapshot entered a 700 mile polar orbit. The onboard nuclear reactor reached full power producing 1580 watts to drive a small ion engine for a one hour run. The cesium fuel provides about 300 hours of operation as space propulsion advances in orbit.

In Xangtok Sikkim the world's first American queen Hope Cooke was crowned with Maharaja Palden Thondup Namgyal. Her baby son did not attend the ceremony preferring films later. Stepchildren attended as diplomats from Austria Japan Nepal Turkey the Netherlands Switzerland and the United States and Tenzing Norgay joined dignitaries for the coronation.
Buddhist monks offered royal robes and insignia symbolizing power over the universe as the Maharaja ascended the throne. The ceremony followed a Purification rite and the setting of a cosmic barrier, while weather forecasts called for partly cloudy skies and mid 70s temperatures in the region.
