The Civil Service Commission launches a drive to hire about 2,000 nurses for Veterans Administration and other federal hospitals to care for wounded servicemen and women. Requirements include graduation from a recognized school of nursing and state registration. no age limit.
Hub Hobby club elected Mrs. R. E. Hamilton president at a Monday night meeting at Mrs. J. R. Hamilton’s home. Mrs. A. J. Hobkert became secretary and Mrs. W. A. Pettey reporter. other officers named included E M Copp and L Earl Hunt. The Hub Cine club later chose R. E. Hamilton president with Howard L. McCauley as vice president and Dr. Pettey as secretary treasurer.
Mrs. Ethel M. English was chosen president of the Composers and Authors club at a Monday meeting in First Presbyterian Fellowship hall. Officers include Mrs. E V Nickell as vice president and Mrs. A Hulen as secretary. treasurer is Mrs. Ethel Hamilton. An original musical program by J M Hall featured lyrics by Dean J O Ellsworth and performers Miss Patti Hall Miss Mary Lois Van Story with Mr Hall on piano and Miss Louie Hardy on violin. A new piece Oceania about the War in the South Pacific was read by Mrs. May Michael. Mrs. B E Young presided. no meeting until May.
Asbury Methodist Awakened Wesleyan class group quilted two blankets for the Red Cross at Fellowship Hall on Tuesday. Twenty four attendees joined a covered dish luncheon after the quilting session.
Today features multiple gatherings including First Baptist TEL class at 1 p m in the activities center, Alathean class at 30 p m, Sew-On club at 3 38 p m, Amiga club at 2 p m, Merviceaires at 7 p m USC, Girl Scout Leaders at 8 38 p m Little House, LAWS at 1 p m with a covered dish luncheon, and more clubs across town.
Miss Clara Pratt, agent, will lead food preparation schools replacing home demonstration meetings in April. The first session is today at 2:30 in Wolfforth's homemaking department, with additional dates at Idalou, Shallowater and Slaton. Clubs participating include Wolfforth, Idalon, Shallowater and Slaton groups with various local chapters.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Killian of Ralls celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary with a dinner hosted by their son Weldon Killian and wife in Roosevelt community. Guests included H. P. Members of Arnett Benson Needle club met at Locust Street chapel Tuesday to quilt. Mrs. C. C. Heatley was hostess. Present were Mesdames A. L. Cranfill, J. F. Eddleman, Verne Morris, L. W. Parker, J. E. Reid and I. T. Weed. The club will meet April 17 at 2 30 p m with Mrs. A N Johnson on Walnut Street.
Paul Hardwick of Citizens National Bank spoke on Our International Monetary Plan at the Lubbock Woman's Club gathering. Mesdames Godeke Moore and Howard discussed parliamentary law and victory gardens. A three day canning course starts April 16 at a technological college. nineteen members attended.
A social meeting of the Lubbock Child Study club was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Lewis Mills, 2102 Twenty-ninth. Attending were Mesdames K. S. Blackford, S. T. Cummings, Jon Daly, B. T. Formby, Roy Farr, L. L. Kelso, W. H. Logan, Ruel C. Martin, C. E. Moreman, Clyde Owens, Lindsey Thompson and John Toles.
Mrs. A. E. Handorf returns to Victoria after a 10 day stay with her parents Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Norton at 2814 Twenty-first. Her husband First Lt. Mendare serves as an instructor at Aloe Field.
Shallowater Parent-Teacher Association will elect officers at 3 p m Thursday at the school.
Plain View Highway Demonstration club met at Mrs. L A Peeples home Tuesday afternoon to hear a program on Grow Beauty Around You. Ten members attended, roll call named a favorite flower or shrub. Refreshments served to G C Vaught R B Kinard T A Hulen Merrell O H Mitchell Ralph Robinson C H Tisdel J M Caddel and T C Hudson. The club will meet May 1 with Mrs Hudson.
Levelland Lions club members presented a program at Anton High School to support the newly organized Anton Lions club. Speakers shared Lions experience. master of ceremonies was Jim Peeler.
The Lone Star Newcomers Club sponsors a dance at the Corral tonight at 8:30 PM replacing the usual box supper. Community members are invited to attend and enjoy an evening of dancing.

Wilbur Forrest of the New York Herald Tribune and Ralph Mc Gill of the Atlanta Constitution depart Chungking for India on a world touring committee mission. They will spend about a week in India before returning to the United States via Australia.
