Sweeping contests loom as 44 New Mexico cities vote
Voters in 44 South Plains eastern New Mexico cities head to polls Tuesday for mayor and council races. In Lubbock mayor and three commissioners will be chosen though two mayoral candidates face no opposition for council seats. Petersburg considers a $40 000 water and sewer bond along with mayor and council contests. Seminole sees a potential first woman mayor candidate and Eunice includes a woman on the ballot. Warm Easter Predicted for Plains Weather
The Weather Bureau forecast a warm Easter with little blowing dust and a chance of thundershowers on the South Plains tonight. Skies will be partly cloudy with southerly winds 15 to 20 mph. Highs reach about 85, then cooler tonight and Monday. Saturday highs ranged from 73 at Galveston to 95 at Presidio and Laredo, with Lubbock's high yet to be noted.

Record 52,000 Licenses Sold in Lubbock County Rush
A last minute rush by Lubbock County vehicle owners pushed license plate sales past 52 000, an all time county record. Mrs John Edmisson chief deputy tax assessor collector and Gene Lasater deputy counted sales before 5 pm Saturday showing about 40 000 passenger car registrations 6 090 truck registrations 3 000 farm trucks and 3 000 registration plates for trucks tractors trailers motorcycles and dealer plates. A Monday morning rush is expected though late registrants face no penalty if not on streets after midnight.
