This note states that Second Edition 5 OCLOCK to The Sun is the only paper in Lowell receiving AP cable and telegraphic despatches and that most news in this issue can be found in other local papers tomorrow if readers wait.
War has not been officially declared in Tokyo or Peking and may take several days. If notes exchange amicably, existing collisions will be disallowed. if not, they become casus belli. Telegraph links between Japan and Korea halted, Yokohama unaware of any declaration. Nagasaka mail steamer bound for Shanghai stopped. The weather bureau calls today the hottest day of the season.
A temporary foot bridge over the Concord River near East Merrimack Street draws crowds as workmen build what is described as a three girder iron bridge. Ferris, famed for the Ferris wheel, inspects the iron work. The bridge features three six foot deep girders, iron sidewalks supports, a granite paving street bed, concrete sidewalks, and Brooklyn-style railing. Contracts require completion by early fall with delays from a cofferdam break already noted.
In a Lawrence interview Hon. George W. Fifield disavowed any campaign committee promoting him and said he would not accept a Democratic nomination. He stated he has no interest and is not an avowed candidate due to his business obligations. He also suggested any such committee acted without his knowledge.
Five Lowell residents narrowly escaped a fatal crash when a horse balked near N A Glidden’s house. Mrs A P Quimby’s shoulder was injured and leg cut. Mrs H Harvey suffered head cuts and unconsciousness. Mrs R T Hadden shaken with minor injuries. No children hurt. Mr Glidden and helpers cared for the wounded at his home as the carriage was badly damaged.
Edward Teague of Pawtucketville recently passed entrance exams to Harvard Medical School and, after graduating Philips Andover, hosted a Lowell party at the family cottage at Juniper Point. He arrived with ten young companions and reports say they are enjoying themselves. Teague bought a 35 foot cat boat for 650 dollars, and on the first fishing trip the group caught 224 fish of various kinds.
Kenora Park in Haverhill drew a huge crowd for a free-for-all race where Ham Brock rode a gray gelding to victory. He won in straight heats and twice broke the track record with a 2.15 percent pace. Edith H. failed to meet expectations.
A country youth rode atop a large hay load and remained content until the Market and Central streets corner where he tumbled, shedding half the hay. He was uninjured and drove off, leaving the remainder to be cleared later.
One of the year’s notable improvements for public safety was the installation of two electric lights on the Summer street side of the South common, about fifty feet from the South street entrance. The work was completed recently and residents in the vicinity highly appreciate it.

A Lakeview theatre show tomorrow features Col. Brown the midget musician John H. McVickers performing original songs and sayings Miss May Armstrong and Miss Edith Cing Mars Kennedy and Stewart with the American orchestra.

E G Baker proposed a pneumatic tube system to carry mail between Lowell and Boston using a metal pipe with indurated fibre and suction engines at each end. Mail would move at high speed, possibly in under two minutes, with half hour one way and half hour the other. He believes rapid transit of this sort will come, given public education on new ideas.
A police court hearing featured a wife accusing her husband of kicking and slapping her as a daughter testified. The man denied the assault and claimed the wife provoked it. The judge found provocation and fined the husband one dollar while the wife leveled sensational counter charges.

Four Gloucester fishermen from the Landseer and David A Storey were saved after seven nights and six days in a dory following a fog. Three others were rescued after three days at sea in a second dory.

James Mulligan famed for Mulligan letters during Blaine campaign died in Marsarp on July 28. Born 1831 in an Irish village, he came to the United States at age 14 and formerly lived at the Hampden Hotel in Boston.
