A rabid mongrel ran amuck on Merrimack Street biting several dogs before Special Officer McGuirk cornered and shot it at City Hall. The dog showed rabies signs, and the incident stirred city hall nerves amid snow storms. The week’s health board report notes typhoid cases, scarlet fever, deaths, and other civic updates from Lowell with various local notices and upcoming events.
Kelley, a Lowell shoe firm agent, is arrested in Somerville after a police sting in Mrs. Morrison’s home. She testified he wooed her with love and pressured a purchase, leading to an assault and battery charge. In court this morning Hadley noted three spectators and four drunks. Thomas Wilson faced charges of drunkenness and assault on Samuel Pearl over a 15 cent shoe repair dispute and a 5 cent demand. he paid $1 and $2 fines. John O Bennett and wife argued with spectators, Bennett arrested for assault on his wife after a reported backhand swipe. Bennett claimed fever and ague and denied biting. A $3 fine was set for James H. Cummings on liquor keeping, case continued a week.
The streets committee and city hall commission met to discuss laying out city hall grounds. A Boston landscape gardener offered plans for front area and a bank wall on Moody. The two committees disagree on who pays for grading and wall construction, delaying action. Chairman Lovejoy did not call a separate street committee meeting, stalling discussion of the First Street extension.

Second concert program in Odd Fellows hall promises delightful numbers including quartets for gloling and cellos and a rownza for the Barat. Rehearsal led by Mr. Barjes at old city hall.

Margarete Whalen 68 arrived from Far River and was taken to 70 West Fourth Street then funeral at St Michael's Church with Catholic burial. Ann McNally funeral from Coburg Street with high mass at St Michael's Church and burial in Catholic Cemetery. David Yates funeral at O Donnell's undertaking rooms with interment in Edson Cemetery.
A Boston telegraph report from January 27 describes a severe winter storm sweeping New England with heavy snow in New York and coastal gales threatening wrecks. Vessels report frightening seas, trains faced delays, and local offices report disruptions. A Peabody physician died aged 40 and a Boston electrician was named receiver of Consolidated Electric Light Co with a $10,000 bond.
In a tense bowling match the Vespers replaced Hood for Harta against the Miserables scoring 2548 to 2019. Dick Welch and Joe Donohoe stood in for Mirren and McLachlin as Vespers won. Capt. Conant’s LCA A team beat Fairburn’s by 24. The Highland club saw a surprising navy-score over 600.
A DelKihtsul Evening, hosted by Lia Rindles af Parishgners of St. Patrick's Parish, featured the church choir and Ladies Sewing circle entertaining over 40 guests. Dr. Michael Doyle led the program with vocal numbers from local singers and humorous pieces by Aly. Edward F. Slattery, with Prof Johnson on piano. A Burns birthday anniversary theme guided songs and a generous collation prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Gifford. Also noted is a Finance Committee meeting called by Councilman Rourke and an offer on granulated sugar at the refinery.
W J Davis Columbia Theatre manager received the second 2000 to bind the Corbett Jackson Right for June. A Brady sent 1000 for Corbett and 1600 from Parson Davies for Jackson. Davis acts as stakeholder and will receive 1000 from each Tugilist representative.
This morning a blaze broke out in a closet at O'Donnell and Gilbride's building, spreading to the room once occupied by the murdered Dr Chaput and now Miss Goodwin. Furniture and belongings were damaged with no insurance on personal items, estimated building logs around $200 insured. Fireman Welch sustained a bad hand after a 12 foot fall while accessing the lower floor.
