The Second Edition 5 OCLOGK iPTHE SUN is described as the only penny paper in Lowell receiving cable and telegraphic despatches. Most items in this issue are available in other local papers tomorrow if readers are patient.
The license committee led by Mayor Pickman, Chief Davis, and Aldermen Johnson Westall and Stanley toured inspections today. They visited Ward One and the upper city, with cigars and hospitality noted, while securing license applicant lists and considering locations for licenses amid expectations of a lengthy process.

Obituaries report the deaths of Josepiine M Scott 43 at 20 Hurd street Robert T Hadden 34 at 437 Chelmsford street and Eliza Turner 72 longtime Westford resident wife of Wm Turner. A school staffing dispute shows Harris declining Varnum assignment and Hodder declining High school posting, suggesting intended changes not implemented.
St John’s parish drew about 1800 people for an Easter sale and opera in Huntington Hall featuring Leila and the Trial by Jury. Miss Hutchinson and Miss Duxbury led strong performances with a large crowd, tables sold out, and 170 dollars at the door from 1400 tickets.
Miss Jordan opens a grand millinery display at 133 137 Merrimack Street next to the Railroad Bank building. The four large windows showcase roses daisies violets ribbons and lace with pink and nile green streamers and chandeliers. Music by Hibbs Orchestra fills the air as 40 ladies staff the shop inviting all to view the display and attend the opening.
Mr J S Lapierre marked his thirty years of marriage with a Wednesday evening social at his Sargent street home attended by about a hundred guests. Notables included Mayor Pickman Judge Hadley and Clerk James F Savage of the police court along with several local and out of town friends from Lynn Nashua Haverhill and Lawrence. A fine collation was served and gifts featured a chandelier silver smoking set and a bouquet with five five dollar gold pieces.
A flock of 60 wild geese was seen flying toward Lone Pond yesterday afternoon. The blurb tunes to hunting interest and hints at hunting activity. An offbeat ad urges readers to compare printing costs and request price quotes.
An evening social hosted by women friends to entertain their male guests drew about fifty couples to Associate Hall. Hibbard's orchestra played from 8 PM to 1 AM, offering 20 dance numbers. Matrons in charge included Mrs. Donovan, Mrs. Crowley, and Mrs. Carmichael, with Miss Katherine Donovan and others managing the event.
The Miserables and a Clark's hotel squad played an invitation bowling match on Miserables alleys last evening. Scores were unusually low after practice games and a 6 pm start. Swift led the Miserables with 390 in three strings. final totals were 2287 to 2181, Miserables winning by 108 pins.
Mr Charles E Townsend operates a corner grocery on Branch and Nichols. Two men prowled inside last night. one fled through a rear window. Townsend drew his revolver, captured the other man who confessed as Edward Hines then named William Washington of Fenwick Street as his accomplice. Washington was arrested after a tip by Officer Holland. Inspectors Laflamme and Allen recovered six cigar boxes and $18 in Hiness room, while Washington found nothing in his. McQuade, charged with larceny for clothing stolen from Stephen Donnellan at Mrs Lane’s boarding house, was identified by Donnellan. Additional larceny charges against McQuade include items from Albert Thorn last month.
The high school shuts today to allow teachers to attend a Boston convention or take a break. Some staff members left town last night for a ten day visit to friends. Farrell and Cona ton advertise water closets and baths at cost, offering cheerful estimates by mail.
Hon L T Jefts of the executive council arrived home with Mrs Jefts and friends after a month in Florida. The trip did not improve Lindefs health as hoped, and the voyage home concluded a period of travel marked by climate challenges.
A new money order system will start July 1 at post offices reducing costs for sending small and large sums by letter. Fees range from three cents for amounts up to 2.50 to 5 dollars, up to 30 cents for 75 to 109 dollars, with coupons securing purchaser and postmaster. postmasters will receive 3 cents per issued money order.

The Pony Polo Club, under the Country club, plans a spring start at Tyngs Island with Dr E W Roche busy securing ponies for George Motley and others. Lowell players expect fun and learning despite not aiming for championship form this year, and Milton could add a seventh club by next season.
The Chrysanthemum whist club met at Mr and Mrs W J Rollins on Fourth street with prizes won by Mrs S Muzzer Miss Annie Harding Mr A D Allard and Mr Cornelius Callahan. Other reports note Miss May Blake to host April 19 at 318 Central street with prizes won by Mrs J Eugene McCormick and Lincoln R Welch. The Four Fives met at W H Ward on Bridge street with top honors going to Miss Sarah Bradley and Mr Arthur Saunders. Nettie Dodge and Libbie Hosford hosted on Chapel street with prize winners Sabry Runels and May Woodies.
At the upcoming Waltham conference Methodist leaders will consider amending the general conference constitution to permit equal law and ministerial representation. They will also adjust ministerial representation to a different ratio and move the meeting time from May 1 to the first Wednesday in May. A note offers bicycles by selling teas and coffees for the U S Tea Co. at Central and abrente.

Ed Flannagan plays on the same team and is regarded as a strong player. He began pro ball in 1885 with Bridgeport and played for Newburyport, Philadelphia, Worcester, Wilkes-Barre, Des Moines, Omaha, and Rochester before joining Dover in 1902. He stood second in league fielding at first base with a .970 average. He logged 59 games, 531 putouts, 23 assists, and 18 errors. Season tickets at Fall River are priced at 10. Hugh Duffy reported for duty with the Boston club. The Boston league team plays at Yale today and tomorrow.
Rumor of skull fracture after the Finnegan's saloon affray stirs Ward Three. Friends of Timothy Finnegan may press Chief Davis for an inquiry, though reports say the fracture claim is not true.
Maggie Maloney of West Street and Martha Willard of London left home this morning and were found near the East Chelmsford line this afternoon. Both were without outer garments and were badly chilled. They were taken to the Day Nursery and then returned to their homes.
At two oclock this afternoon O Donnell and Gilbride opened their store for the anniversary opening. The American orchestra will give a second concert this evening. An account of the opening will appear in tomorrow's Sun. The Tewksbury band will present a drama at the town hall on the nineteenth of April. Miss Maybud Reilly will dance a pes seul at the Continental tea for the Humane society. Get all your printing done at the Sun office.
Thomas J. Fishon former Roxbury gas works superintendent died by his own action in his room at 14 Copeland Street, after suffering melancholia. The report, filed April 6, notes his respected status and cause of death.
In a court morning session, Mary Carroll a young auburn haired girl charged with lascivious conduct was discharged after the complainant failed to appear. Lawyer Cawley O'Connell and others prominent in prior cases were present as the scene hinted at ongoing conflicts among the legal circle.
Orrra House presented a large capable company with stage equipment performing Siberia last night. The crowd is expected again tonight and tomorrow. Eben Woodbury of Hudson, once a local farm product seller, entered a house on Eliot Street in Lowell with apparent intent to steal but left without being arrested. He was later caught in Manchester for the same scheme and held for the May term of the Superior Court. Woodbury reportedly owns a Hudson farm.
Three drunks were released. Frank Cullen pleaded guilty to drunkenness and not guilty to larceny, to be tried tomorrow. Edward Hines and William Washington confessed breaking and entering shops and were held for the grand jury at 500 dollars each. James A. McQuade admitted larceny of clothing from Thorn and Donnelly and was sentenced to 16 months in jail. Henry Flanagan found guilty of larceny from a building and fined 10 dollars. Drunkenness complaint dismissed.
Just before one o'clock a black horse hitched to an open bogey ran away in Centralville. At Second street on Bridge a collision with CU H Kimball's carriage loomed. Kimball's driver urged his horse and a race ensued. Kimball's horse won. The runaway fled through Merrimack Square and Prescott street, where Tom Sayers, the street car starter, caught the horse by the bridle lifting him off his feet. Spectators applauded. the horse was unharmed.
A Middlesex street pedestrian jeered at a snow pile in front of Odd Fellows hall, blamed the street superintendent for poor care. The snow, imported from Vermont for the sugar party, melted hours later after officials acted.

Notables including Revs Lavoie McAvinone Gledue Nolan attended. credits went to Adelaide Sullivan for superb organization.
