Taunton Sept 30. A head on crash on the Old Colony street railway line just above the trestle in Raynham involved a repair car and an electric car filled with passengers bound for the Brockton fair. Several injured while six were taken to Morton hospital. None placed on dangerous list.
A Courier-Citizen report notes wood availability remains ample with output in the hundreds of cords daily and no imminent scarcity. Prices are blamed for hikes, some dealers even buying wood in New Hampshire to meet demand while the city contemplates rapid cutting and delivery within six weeks.
Purchasing Agent Fred H. Rourke returns from northern New England with mixed results on city wood supply. He found high prices and delivery risks, noting 900 to 400 cords blocked in Lowell at $7.25, while nearby woodland offers $6 to $6.60 per cord with city cutting crews. He may urge buying uncut wood and organizing city choppers, leveraging Little Canada woodmen for seasonal work.
Six companies of the Fourth regiment under Col O Neil arrived from Reading Allentown Lebanon and Harrisburg to Mount Carmel Pa to quell a strike. They camped in the Reading railroad yard where over 2000 strikers gathered but did not demonstrate. Strike leaders urged order and to return home while deputies at Richards colliery were surrounded by a mob until daybreak.
In Tamaqua Pennsylvania on September 30 troops moved through the Panther Creek valley to curb a boisterous element trying to intimidate non-union workers. Pickets gathered, but no disturbance occurred. Strikers show less union interest than months prior and relief funds are judged insufficient to meet demand.
Secretary of the Treasury Leslie M. Shaw met with bankers in the financial district including George F. Baker Francis L. Hines and Vanderlip of National City bank. He planned to stay downtown and praised improving monetary outlook.
Concord New Hampshire September 30 Governor Jordan has been asked by William Co Maybury mayor of Detroit and Fred W Smith president of the Detroit city council to appoint twenty New Hampshire citizens to attend a October 9 conference in Detroit. The aim is to devise ways to secure a reasonable coal supply from Pennsylvania and West Virginia anthracite districts. Similar requests go to other state governors affected by the strike.

The New York Herald reports the engagement of Miss Helen Roosevelt Roosevelt to Theodore Roosevelt Douglas Robinson of New York. Miss Roosevelt is the daughter of James Roosevelt Roosevelt. The fiancé is the son of Mr and Mrs Douglas Robinson and a nephew and namesake of President Roosevelt. He attends Harvard University as a junior. He is a cousin several times removed of his fiancée.
San Francisco officials vote to reopen Ingleside race track after years closed. Clergymen and the Civic association opposed the measure but the board of supervisors approved the ordinance permitting the reopening.
