In Halifax the province swung against prohibition, reversing a 2500 lead to a 4000 against margin as turnout was light. Nova Scotia overall favored prohibition while other provinces reported low turnout and a large anti prohibition majority, with Montreal alone delivering about 12,000 against.
Edgar F Wheeler and Samuel West were the only drunks on the docket to be sentenced with Wheeler sent to the workhouse for six months and West to the state farm for ten months. Libby Lavise and Adolphus Fallon faced larceny charges for a Locks and Canals lantern. Lavise pleaded guilty while Fallon denied involvement. Officer Redmond Welch testified they took the lantern from a post within 20 feet. The judge found both guilty and fined $15 each, to be paid in three days or face three months in jail. Robert C Clark paid $10 for assaulting his wife, saying provocation and prior warnings led to a slap rather than a punch. A wife’s testimony described a minor pat while visible injuries suggested otherwise. James Flaherty withdrew appeal from ten days for drunkenness, receiving peace bonds instead. Samuel Chouinard was found not guilty of dove larceny and discharged. Cesarice Dusablon’s larceny case for $10.75 was continued to Saturday.
The United States peace commission has moved into working quarters at Hotel Continental in Paris and is shaping plans for a joint session. Spanish commissioners deny giving interviews about their instructions.
The body of Hon. Thomas F. Bayard arrived in Boston from Dedham this morning and departed for Wilmington Del on the Continental express. A small party of relatives accompanied the body.
San Francisco reports twenty four gold hunters arriving aboard the steamer Catherine Suddon say there is no gold on Kotzebue sound and crowds are departing.
Fighting between Turks and Armenians erupts at Alashgarb. Fifty Armenians killed in the encounter. Also reported a Jamaica cyclone approaching from the northeast as analyzed by the weather bureau.

In Canada the prohibition plebiscite drew a larger than expected turnout with Quebec yielding the heaviest opposition. French clergy urged against the measure citing increased law breaking and smuggling. Prince Edward Island showed a light vote but a rising majority for prohibition. Toronto reported a surprise result with a majority against prohibition, contrasting with 1894 when a prohibition majority existed.
Counts of the Chelmsford Republican caucus ballots for county and representative delegates were recounted at the town hall under Sec 98 of the 1898 Acts. The tally altered several delegate selections, with Shaw, Cushing, Robbins, and Ramsey groups showing different names and votes, and a recount requested in ward 8 amid legal questions about the recount process.
In Ward 7, political talk notes 190 Republicans voted from 416 on the check list as the French Americans stayed away. The Hayes contest drew fewer votes than the last caucus. many ballots blank or crossed against rival names nullifying votes. The Republican county convention is expected to be tame. Harry E Shaw, a Cush ing backer with real estate interests, mourned as tenants supported him at the caucus. The French American Citizens club denies plans to doom Joseph L Chalifoux for mayor. Chalifoux is a member but not a candidate. The Democratic committee moved its convention to Oct 6 at 1 am in Associate hall. Rep James P Ramsay was in Chelmsford seeking delegates from the caucus results.
A vintage patent medicine ad claims susceptibility to disease comes from impure blood and promotes Hood's Sarsaparilla as a cure for scrofula salt rheum and rheumatism among others. It asserts the medicine clears germs, purifies blood, and strengthens the system with Hood's Pills as a companion.
John Jones of 6 Hazelton street fell 57 feet from a windmill in North Pelham while at work. He suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries, died at St John’s hospital after a long ambulance ride. He was 49 and leaves a wife, three sons, and two daughters, with lodge memberships noted.
William J. Long, rejected by Cambridge council after being chosen pastor of North Avenue Congregational church, was sustained by the Andover Association of Congregational Ministers. At Methuen meeting the same creed answers were given and the association unanimously licensed him to preach, a significant theological victory. Long remarked on the unanimous decision, questioning Cambridge council's representativeness.
The Sisters of Charity at St. John's hospital thank donors for support to ill and wounded soldiers. The D. L. Page Co provided ice cream and sherbet, Mrs. Adelbert Ames sent apples, and the Misses Dempsey contributed north-grown grapes and peaches. The gifts boost morale and aid the hospital in caring for the men.
The 1898 Legislature restricts free rides for city officials and firemen. No new passes will be issued and the Lowell and Suburban company will continue the current trip books without reissuing. Some officials and firefighters must begin paying fares while police in uniform on duty may still ride without tickets.
Rev Addison P. Foster D D and Miss Gertrude Deyo wed on September 22 at New Paltz New York. They plan to reside in Auburndale. Foster is the son of the late Dr E B Foster former pastor of John Street church. His first settlement was at Appleton Street now Eliot church.
Lowell completed studies at Andover and served a highly successful pastorate. He had many friends in the city who cherish memories of his labors and the pleasant impact he made during his ministry here.
Mrs H M widow of Joseph E Pindar died at her Cottage City summer home after a weeklong illness of heart failure. Born in Somersworth NH she was 90 years and 1 month old, married in Newmarket NH, moved to Lowell in 1850, and lived here with son James H. Pindar. Survived by son George J. of Boston and daughter Laura J. Pindar. longtime St Paul s M E church member. 32 years a Cottage City visitor. Funeral from her son s Merrimack and Alder streets at 2 today. Also noting death of Mary E Wass and Sarah Lewis with family details.

Willis G. Hill led six outsiders in a five win one draw showing, while George W. Dearborn, facing eight members, won four games and drew four with Richardson Hill Dowd and Morris. Next week includes a blindfolded exhibition with Dearborn versus an outsider.
John Irwin, a longtime employee in the tailoring department at Putnam & Son, fell while trimming tree limbs at his Kenwood home yesterday. He sustained severe internal injuries, with no broken bones, and his aged condition may prove fatal.
The first YMCA Bible class for Sunday school study meets tomorrow Saturday at 3 30 PM in the YMCA building led by Rev George H Johnson. All men and women are invited to attend.
At yesterday's regular meeting the overseers transacted routine business. Supt. Pindar reported 405 inmates 66 tramps and 18 deaths for the month. The board adjourned to meet Tuesday night.
Lowell auxiliary of the Massachusetts Volunteer Aid Association will ship funds and supplies to the Sixth regiment. The Bay State sails tomorrow for Porto Rico, carrying the aid and support from local volunteers.
Supt. True expects Huntington hall lean will be available next week and the city will begin clearing debris from Huntington hall.
The Young People's society of Westminster Presbyterian church were entertained at Miss Dickerson's 210 Wilder street on Thursday evening with a musical program, a short comedy, games, and refreshments. Mrs Willis E Hatch's Paige Street F B Sunday school class and husbands were hosted by their teacher at 118 South Spring street for an evening of readings and entertainment.

Black of Boston nurses her brother Ralph of M company Ninth regiment sick with typhoid.
