At Witham station on the Great Eastern line an express from London to Cromer left the track and crashed into the depot. Ten people died including a station porter, twenty were injured, two ticket sellers were trapped but survived serious harm. The rear cars struck the platform and buildings, then overturned and caught fire before bodies were removed.

Sylvania Tows Gloucester Schooner After Collision
The Cunard liner Sylvania driving from Liverpool to Boston collided with the Gloucester fishing schooner Nelson J. McFarland twenty miles east of Boston Light at 2:30 this morning. The schooner’s bow sprit and headgear were torn away and Captain Calvin Swasey was thrown overboard but rescued. The Sylvania towed the damaged schooner to shore for repairs while the Cunarder suffered no harm.

Italian chef held on murder assault charge in Providence
Henry Perfetti alias Enrico Perfetti, an Italian chef from a Boston hotel, was arrested after stabbing Mary Foley with a stiletto in Providence. He was arraigned in district court on violent assault with intent to kill, bound over to the grand jury in 1000 dollars. Foley, taken to hospital in serious condition, suffered a likely punctured left lung though fatal outcome not expected.
