In North Salem Illinois on October 30 a street fight between members of a Tennessee colony settled here and local citizens left one Tennesseean dead, one citizen fatally wounded, and many injured after a bar room quarrel sparked about 30 shots. Citizens arm themselves in anticipation of further clashes.
Mail dispatches from the Congo say Capt Mohun of the Belgian Tanganyika Congo telegraph expedition reached the Congo Free State after a July clash with cannibals at San Fullo. The 1500 enemy had 300 killed and 600 wounded. Belgian losses were nine killed and 47 wounded.
A Holland source says the entire British army at Ladysmith has surrendered and the troops are now prisoners of war. Berlin dispatch dated October 30 relays the claim of a large capitulation with British forces captured in the siege action.
A Brookline special reports William Parker of Pepperell Massachusetts was shot and killed in a quarrel with a man named Wobbie at a road house near Manchester New Hampshire on October 30. Wobbie fled into the woods and remains missing.
Laura Seavey a 20 year old wife employed at Howarth and Watson’s tube works tried to kill herself by drinking household ammonia at her sister’s Lincoln street home. She regained consciousness before hospital admission and is recovering at St John’s hospital. The act followed her separation from her husband who left six months ago. she had joked about not wishing to live for five dollars and sixty cents a week.
Lewis C. Allen of 9 Franklin court fell from a staging to the ground while painting at Fletcher and Franklin streets. Though the drop was about 30 feet he struck a grass plot and sustained only a hard shake up. David Hall cut his hand on a broken window at the Middlesex. All Saints Day services planned at House of Prayer Walker Street near Grove with Holy Communion at 7 30 a m Choral Evensong at 7 30 Vespers and a sermon by Rev. Father Osborne S S J Flowers for the altar may be left Tuesday between 4 and 6.
