In Raleigh crowds cheer the president amid a staunch call for government oversight of railroads and price controls. The square deal pledge targets both rich and poor with insistence on supervisory regulation.
Boston reports the Massachusetts supreme court upheld $4,500 awards to administrators of three victims in the Tewksbury dynamite mill blast of July 29, 1903. The court found American Powder Mills negligent and that its servants were grossly negligent, with liability sustaining whether sole or concurrent cause. The fault centered on failure to stop a dynamite leak.
The president urged sustaining the Southern mountains forests in his North Carolina speech and also spoke firmly on railroad rate legislation.
President Roosevelt arrived in Raleigh on a special train amid a large turnout. A reception committee welcomed him as Gov. Glenn was absent in Greensboro at a brother's funeral. Mrs Roosevelt and Lt. In Salem a protest by counsel for the relatives of Mrs. Jennie P. Chase seeks revocation of the 1889 adoption of Deforest W. Chase. The petition argues the adoption was not voluntary but fraudulently obtained by Dr. Horace Chase to make Deforest an heir. Mrs. Chase died at her Swampscott home from gas poisoning after being found unconscious with doors and windows locked.
Copenhagen Oct. 18 a Norwegian premier despatch reports a full Norwegian government agreement on promptly resolving the throne question by storthing vote. The Danish court will abandon plebiscite and Prince Charles of Denmark is willing to accept Norway’s crown when elected by a majority of the storthing.
The poor debtor hearing of Thomas J McDermott at the police court was continued for one week at the request of Lawyer Pay. J J O Connor represents McDermott.
Ei Azhar receives a silver medal at the St Louis Exposition as part of the event's award ceremonies. Local attendees note the achievement and salute the exhibitor's craftsmanship during the concluding remarks.
New York Oct. 19 Two arrests by policemen swimming across Pelham bay in pursuit of two fugitives were made in deep water several hundred feet off shore. William Wilkins of Greenwich Connecticut and Frederick Odell of Brooklyn were caught after leaping into the bay to escape. They were held for good behavior for three months and each posted 100 bail.
A body believed to be Dr. G H Grant of Buffalo was found cut to pieces in the New York Central tunnel after a fall from a train. No money was found on the clothing, a tailor’s mark bearing the name served as identification. Buffalo doctors note only one Dr G H Grant matches the description.
The Middlesex North Agricultural Society held its annual meeting at the New American House. About 25 members from several towns attended, with President Arthur H. Cluer in the chair. Trustees discussed fair finances, ground sale plans, and approved committees including George W. Trull as premiums chairman and on institutes.

Montreal on Oct 19 John F Ryan of New York announces plans to construct a race track on the city outskirts at an estimated cost of 275000 dollars. He states that John Boden, William F Riggs, Frank J Bryan, Jacob Holtman and W C Percy will join the organization, with capital provided by New York and Montreal investors. opening day expected next.
W N Oct. 1 W FE Stavert liquidator of the Bank of Yarmouth announces immediate payment of a 75 percent dividend on approved claims. The court has approved the claims report. The bank suspended last March and a double stockholders assessment has yielded 190000 toward the dividend.
Edward George Cunliffe an Adams Express employee was arrested in Bridgeport Conn after fleeing Pittsburg with about 100000 dollars. He confessed to taking the money saying a 65 dollar a month salary tempted him and he would return to Pittsburg with the funds. He had 290 dollars on him and promised to reveal the money’s location after reaching Pittsburg. He expressed remorse and a wish to be honest and face the courts.
Portland Maine October first reports the Canadian ticket agents who have been in the city since Saturday night for their annual convention and outing left early today on a special Mountain division Maine Central railroad train for Montreal. Luncheon was served at Farnane.
