New Haven, Oct 18 Arthur Twining Hadley was inaugurated as Yale Universitys 13th president in Battell chapel. The ceremony drew hundreds of dignitaries despite heavy rain and featured brief remarks by Hadley and Yale professors. Harvard Princeton and other college leaders attended the event.
Pretoria Oct 16 Gen Cronje warned women and children to leave Mafeking then opened fire on the town with cannon this afternoon. There was no response. Commandant General Joubert has arrived at Newcastle Natal and found only 100 men there when he entered.
Knightston Indiana October 18 A major town fire this morning caused extensive damage and likely the loss of three to five lives. A Masonic Temple burning as the town’s largest building collapsed trapping volunteer firemen who died. Property losses are estimated at $100,000.

Funeral services for J. F. M. Lyons of the Boston Globe were held at his Dorchester home after his death in an accident last Saturday. Rev. William H. Allbright led the service with pallbearers from Insurance and Globe circles, and burial followed at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
The common council unanimously approved an aldermen’s recommendation to add at least six policemen and passed a resolution to borrow 1100 dollars to cover the extra expense. Alderman Tay- is noted in the closing lines of the report.

He says a Massachusetts regiment carried a flag in Mexico and it was returned in 1848 by Col. Wright. A Mexican War veterans meeting discussed the flag’s condition at the State House and proposed placing it in a glass case after legislative funding.
The body found in Broad Canal Cambridge is identified as William Carr of 992 Cambridge Street. He was son of James Carr and lived with his father and an invalid brother. Two young men recognized him from a police photograph and the remains, buried Tuesday, will be disinterred at the family's request.
In the Superior Court Judge Lilley presiding the jury awarded $5000 to the defendant in the case of McFadden vs Lawrence Manufacturing Co. Counsel for the plaintiff McVey moved for a new trial and the civil docket closed as the term adjourned. Criminal cases to be heard Monday.
In Versailles Kentucky on October 17 the Bryan party arrived amid rain and a large crowd. Ex Senator J C S Blackburn met the visitors at Frankfort and escorted them to the courthouse where he introduced Mr Bryan. Blackburn’s daughter was seriously ill, and he was absent from the tour.
By moonlight the crippled yacht Shamrock was repaired tonight in the yards of Robbins and Son at Erie basin Brooklyn. Company men led the work up to the new topmast and gaff placement with midnight nearing completion. The topmast measures 56 feet and 12 inches at the base while the 60 foot gaff shares the same base diameter.

Ten drunks faced police court this morning. John T. Harrahan, John C. Crotty, William McKenna, and Albert J. Shanley were fined $6 each. Eagan and Vail face State farm terms. Costello guilty of assault and drunkenness after disputing a shave with Armenian barber K Gabodian at 9 Charles Street. fined $15 on both counts.
In Lowell, Tremont and Suffolk v city case resumes in probate court. Captain James G Hill testifies on mill machinery valuations across Tremont Suffolk and Lawrence mills. He estimates total depreciation at 1 709 585 with corp witnesses around 659 000. He describes machinery condition as generally good and explains depreciation rules. Hearing adjourned to 2 p m after cross examination by Mr Dunbar.
Forty lasters at John M. Stover’s shoe factory walked out over the hiring of two Greeks. Stover refused to discharge them, the strike disrupted most of the shop, but workers wished to return and were readmitted by noon. Stover said Greek workers were paid on the same schedule as others. Also noted: Jacob Murphy’s railroad health status and Brazer and Co’s fall neckwear showcase.
George W. Millmore a Western Union operator in Harvard Square Cambridge was arrested by Deputy Moffatt of the Lowell police on a complaint by Mary E. Chase charging him with obtaining money under false pretenses He faced Judge Hadley in police court pleaded not guilty to two counts totaling 4929 and bail was set at 2200 with the case continued to October 6 The note loan was for a Somerville house and Millmore claims he invested the money in the stock exchange with his wife present in court
The inspector of wires aims to finish a full city pole location record by year end. New England Telephone Western Union and Postal have submitted maps. Electric Light delays due to management upgrades. No city hall record exists for many pole locations.
Mrs Anna I Pihl wife of Martin E Pihl died Tuesday at her home 49 South Whipple street after a prolonged illness aged 66 years 8 months 1 day. She leaves a husband and four children. Funeral from the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran church on Meadowcroft street Thursday at 4 pm. Relatives and friends invited. Those wishing seats in carriages notify Undertaker Currier or Carl G Pihl.
Deaths reported in the city include John Peel aged 64 of 46 Cross street and Anna BE Pihl aged 66 of 49 South Whipple street. Sally H Austin aged 95 years 3 months dies with service at granddaughter’s home 59 Billerica street on Thursday at 2 pm. Catherine Agnes McNulty aged 22 dies at 887 Gorham street.
