In Atlanta on October 138 The father of Tom Carruthers, condemned to be hanged on October 16 for the murder of Henry Byrd, applied to Gov. Terrell for the $250 reward after his son escaped and was recaptured. The Wilcox county farmer’s information aided the arrest, and the sheriff endorsed the request.

Great Falls Mont Oct 13 The Great Falls land office receives Washington orders to withdraw every desert land entry south of the Missouri river affecting about 1150000 acres. Desert entry patents now issued are suspended pending investigation. Orders follow a report by Special Agent Chadwick sent to probe widespread charges of fraud in the district. The report supports many claims raised by U S Senator Gibson of Montana.
Rumford Falls Me Oct 13 All but one of nine paper machines at International mills are running full time and nearly the entire 700 man crew has returned except machinists. The last machine will start after more drivers are added. Machinists' rep Mr Landers fourth vice president of the National Association of Machinists has been in town seeking a settlement with no progress yet.

William L. Ferris was sentenced to five months in the police court after pleading guilty to stealing a pair of $2.50 shoes from Edward Lavery’s shoe repair shop. Deputy Welch testified Ferris entered the back shop Monday night, ran into Officer Murphy, and was caught with the shoes. Ferris also had canned goods believed stolen. The judge considered his prior petty larceny and breaking and entering records.
George E. Gillard aged 39 a former Lowell man died Oct 9 in Oklahoma Indian Territory after a long illness of consumption. The body will be brought to Lowell for burial. He worked as assistant cashier for Equitable Insurance in Boston and with New York Life in Washington DC. Five brothers and one sister Christina Gillard survive.
Dr. J. B. O Connor returns from the South while Charles H. Allen earns praise as assistant secretary of the navy. His business training, system, and poised leadership earn McKinley and cabinet approval for Allen to become the first insular governor after the war.
St Louis October 13 reports employees of the Pacific Express company across the United States demand a 10 percent wage increase. They threaten to strike next Thursday if the demand is not met.
