Boston detective notes John F Neill a leading Boston businessman died suddenly at 11 45 p m in his Union street drug store perhaps from apoplexy or a fractured skull. He had marched with the Ancient and Honorable Artillery company in memorial services for President McKinley and collapsed after leaving his armory. He died later that evening.
Chicago Oct 7 A general strike of linemen employed by Bell Telephone and allied systems across the country is threatened after the Chicago company refused wage scale increases. Strikers say the Chicago operation is essentially the Bell company. If called more than 12 600 linemen would be involved.
Malden reports a harmonious Republican convention renaming Hon. George R. Jones for senator and Alfred E. Cox for the State committee by acclamation. Delegates adopted resolutions backing capital punishment for attempted assassinations of the President or Vice President and opposing publication of cartoons depicting them.
Boston October 8 Harvard University reports a overall decline across departments. Total students number 4234 with 327 seniors 413 juniors 521 sophomores 652 freshmen and 142 specials. Law school 538 graduates school 291 divinity 584 medical 498 and dental 104.
Grace church hosts a concert featuring local and out of town talent. Admission is 15 cents. Concert item notes the date Wednesday October 9.
The Traders National Bank transacts a general banking business and issues foreign exchange in multiple currencies. It provides safety deposit boxes with private rooms and a savings department offering 34 percent per annum, compounded semi annually. Monthly interest accrues. Banking hours are 9 to 4 with Saturday 8 to 1 and evening hours 7 to 9. Locations are 30 to 46 Middlesex Street and 11 to 24 Post Office Ave.
Philippopolis Oct 8 Citizens express outrage at government for lax action allowing Macedonian committee to abduct the missionary. The only escape seen is ransom payment, with Roosevelt directing finish within 30 days. Officials hope abroad and at home will secure release, though danger remains and a grim deadline looms.
From Samokoff Bulgaria an American missionary reports negotiations with brigands aiming to reduce the ransom demanded for Miss Stone.
Boston October 8 The total contributions for the Miss Stone ransom up to noon today were 55000. Funds are being forwarded to the state department in Washington which will handle delivery to the brigands. Officials of the American Board oppose paying a ransom but support continuing fundraising as long as there is hope she lives.
Vienna dispatch reports U S Consul Dickenson and a mission envoy travelled to Sofia to press ransom payment for Miss Stone. Brigands extend payment deadline by one month. Daily Telegraph notes Miss Stone abducted under orders from the Macedonian committee after a long audience with Prince Ferdinand.
London Oct 8 Dr Krause former Johannesburg governor was arraigned before the extradition court on high treason and incitement to murder. Prosecutors allege he secured a 24 hour armistice from Lord Roberts used to evacuate Boer fighters and transfer 180000 pounds to Pretoria. He is also said to have urged the shooting of Foster, the English lawyer with Roberts staff.
In Boothbay Harbor Maine on October 8 a fire destroyed the N J Powers Packing Co sardine factory smoke house and wharf at West Harbor. Loss set at 20000 dollars leaving 150 workers unemployed as the sardine business was thriving and will suffer a heavy setback.
Mayor Van Wyck forecast a large Tammany plurality for Edward M. Shepard. He said the grand jury will soon deliver indictments, noting the DA supports such actions but claims the administration will be beaten by 60,000 to 70,000, after which the uproar will subside for two years.
The Rev Dr Alexander Burgess bishop of the diocese of Quincy died this morning at his daughter's home in St Albans Vermont. He was a Vermont native and died of old age.
In Philadelphia on October 8 Henry Ivory and Charles Perry were hanged for the murder of Prof Roy White of the University of Pennsylvania law department. The crime occurred a year earlier as a nighttime robbery attempt, when Prof White was beaten to death in his bed.
State Department officials have arranged a possible 30 day extension in the Miss Stone ransom case. A messenger has been sent to Bulgarians holding the missionary to ensure the $110,000 ransom would be paid if the extension is granted. The department says it has done all in its power to secure her rescue.

About twenty five drinkers faced Judge Hadley in the police court this morning. Lawrence Scully argued his case, but was fined six dollars and given a chance to support his father. Others received fines or probation, with several sent to the city farm for months. Multiple individuals from Boston to Fletcher street faced penalties for drinking and related offenses.
The family of John Flannery, 50, is worried after he disappeared from his home at 433 Lakeview Avenue yesterday. He has been ill for some time and is believed to have headed toward Lawrence with no money for fare.

S Herbert Howe of Marlboro was named by the Republican councillor convention for the sixth district at Malden. On the first ballot he defeated Walter S Watson of Lowell and E C Mead of Everett. Howe received 135 votes to 105 for Watson and 17 for Mead, with 129 needed. Delegation defections from Waltham and Medford decided the result behind closed doors.
The board meets with a recommendation to buy a new cremator for the city at a cost of 25000 dollars 19000 for the system and 6000 for garbage-collection teams after viewing the Smith cremator in Bridgeport Conn. Jerome Manning contesting Crescent street sewer will be heard tonight along with prior protests. Engineers Snow and Harrington are expected to report on Pawtucket bridge at the session.
Opening day at the Young Men's Christian Association gymnasium drew a large crowd in both classes with a record evening turnout.
