Abner Oakes was today convicted of murder in the first degree for killing his son Oliver on August 31. The penalty is life imprisonment.
North wind 20 knots, clear skies as Shamrock and Columbia race from the Hook. The Shamrock overtakes the Columbia after a tense start, taking a narrow lead by 1.40 and extending it to 2.13 with winds fading and spinnakers in play. Excursionists report diminished crowds but crews push for advantage on a course favoring wind shifts near Long Branch.
On Knox College campus in Galesburg Illinois October 7 President McKinley and Postmaster General Smith delivered stirring commemorative addresses recalling the Lincoln Douglass contest. Senator Cullom led the Illinois welcome as the crowd applauded. After the exercises the presidential train left at noon for Chicago.
London October 7 The royal proclamation summons Parliament to meet October 17 and authorizes calling out reserves to bring every battalion to full strength. The Gazette notes reserves needed to deploy forces for Africa and support national defense efforts.
In Chicago on October 6 the McCoy Choynski boxing bout ended in a draw after six rounds. The match featured men presenting themselves as required, while stores of military preparations were noted in Transvaal and the Orange Free State.
New York Oct 6 Bradstreet's review indicates distributive trade remains broadly active with lower market declines, rising bank clearings and fewer failures. Prices show strength, farm products lead with a near 0.5 cent weekly drop in grain value, and wool and coal hold firm while iron and steel demand stays robust. Rail earnings rise as shipping costs increase and October disbursements boost totals. nine months surpass last year’s full total.
The Washington treasury reported that silver certificates exceeded circulating silver dollars by 128,616, prompting immediate cancellation to regain legal balance. George McFadden defeated ex champion George Kid Lavigne at 113 pounds before the New Broadway A. C. in New York. McFadden's superb defense and blocking of Lavigne's rushes carried the fight, with odds swinging in his favor after the twelfth round. Lavigne was battered at the finish, and McFadden left the ring scarcely marked.
Washington Oct 6 The state department announces that Transvaal Republic has named Gen James O Beirne of Baltimore as its diplomatic representative in Washington. Acting Secretary Hill replies that U S rules forbid recognizing an American citizen as the diplomatic representative of a foreign government.
The University of Vermont trustees voted to award Admiral George Dewey the degree of Doctor of Laws. The ceremony is planned in Burlington on October 6.
Joseph Munson aged 40 a Polander committed death by self act in the police station this afternoon by hanging with a strap. He was arrested about 12 30 on a charge of drunkenness. He leaves a colored widow.
An old advertisement extols Hood's Sarsaparilla as a spring tonic and purifier for the blood kidneys and bowels. Engineer Hakon Hammer of Pottstown Pa endorses the remedy and urges buyers to ensure they get Hood's.
George G. King of Concord, a clean shaven lawyer in the Democratic fold, arrived with country delegates and toppled Lowell control at a sixth district senatorial convention held at Barristers’ hall. The meeting, chaired by King with W. W. Kidder secretary, seated 41 delegates from 16 towns, rotating power to the Concord camp. Highlights include King’s acclamation as nominee, Lowell hostility, and a lively roll call dispute as country delegates asserted influence over the outcome.
Evening schools open Monday October 16 at 7 o clock in Green Colburn Mann Aiken Pawtucket Mann Bartlett Edson and more. Registration October 9 10 12 13 7 to 9 pm. Courses include reading writing grammar arithmetic bookkeeping languages stenography and design with a new business course in the high school.
Several defendants faced the court this morning on liquor and drunkenness charges. Peter McCarty was jailed three days after furniture damage and family reports. Edward Warsnop and Thomas Donohoe were sent to the State farm with Donohoe held on 200 bail on appeal. Alphonse Bacon paid a six dollar fine for a second offence. Michael Kasmekos and Israel Kronberger had their drug adulteration case continued to October 17. Isaac Safair pled guilty to common drunkenness and was placed on probation for six months. Daniel Wood’s liquor case and James McCauley’s assault on his wife were continued or placed on probation. Joseph Haas’s inquiry was conducted by Detective Laflamme in Fitchburg.
Joseph G Haas 26 was captured by Fitchburg police after warrants issued in Lowell and Worcester. He faces three counts of larceny linked to a boot and shoe store theft and fraudulent use of a trunk shop owner's name to obtain a trip book. Haas and his wife and blind child were in the investigation.
Lowell companies received orders to hold the fall drill in Boston on Saturday October 14 the date of Admiral Dewey’s Boston visit. Earlier plans set October 9 but were canceled due to the Dewey visit. At Walnut Hill field day next week Sixth regiment teams from Companies C and G will compete with 10 men per team plus two non commissioned officers and two privates to score. Major Kane of the Ninth regiment mustered in several candidates in Company M.
The Lowell ledge expected for the school annex foundation adds two to three thousand dollars to the contract price. Masons had rated the land as free of ledge, yet bids included extra for blasting. Lowell geology shows rich underground ledges, including the Lawrence Street engine house site where unforeseen rock raised the final payment to 5356 61.

The Tourist club held its first social and banquet in Bay State hall on Friday night featuring dancing and supper. Frank Dockett served as toastmaster as prominent members spoke, with a large corps of officers and helpers including Thomas Quinlan as floor locator and a long list of aides and young ladies assisting.
Lehigh coal remains scarce and expensive as many smelting mills consume the output. The shortage, coupled with strikes, has limited Cumberland soft coal and pushed prices higher across all Lehigh coal grades.

Edward Heffernan of Lynn a veteran wholesale liquor dealer with years in business assigns his interests. He formerly owned a Boston store and showed interest in a city brewery. Heffernan is well known in Lowell with many friends.
