Prominent Concord railroad official Hon J H Pearson died at his home early Wednesday. Born March 17 1818 in Sutton he built Penacook flour mills and led flour and grain ventures in the west. He was a director in Concord and Montreal R A and twice married Mary Ann Butterfield in 1839 and Jessie Ridgeley in 1889.
New York on October 5 reports the Shamrock and Columbia racing from Sandy Hook toward Long Island shores in light winds and thick haze. The Shamrock led early, both yachts under spinnakers, with Columbia gaining to even terms before calms set in. By 2 p.m. the wind died and both yachts were becalmed as the excursion fleet lagged behind. reports note the pace and shifting breeze throughout the race.
The Daily Telegraph cites a Newcastle Natal despatch noting Boer artillery moves starting yesterday. Boers occupy Laings Neck nightly and head toward southwest Wolksrust mountains. No British troops near Ladysmith. Natal defenses planned to retreat to Glencoe. Newcastle residents decide to evacuate if the Boers advance.

John Earle, calling himself John Earle, presented with infectious symptoms after visiting St Johns hospital. He was not admitted and isolated in an unused outbuilding, later diagnosed as smallpox and moved to contagious hospital. Officials assure public no general vaccination planned and isolation measures begin at his Appleton street residence.
Miss Josephene Belle Pickering and Frederic Burnside Harbottle were married at Kirk Street Church in a simple ceremony marked by laurel and palm decorations.
