A Democratic speaker charges that President McKinley stands for trusts and monopoly. He asserts the Democratic state ticket will lead next month and that W. J. Bryan is regarded as the great commoner. The piece notes Bryan may feel more common after the election and references a college cane rush with Cain as a label.
Boston October 2 John Gleason, described as demented, shot and seriously wounded Father Lawrence P. McCarthy rector of the Most Holy Redeemer church East Boston at the parochial residence. Gleason asked if the priest was born in Ireland then fired five shots. One bullet struck the priest in the back. Physicians believe he will recover. Gleason is 50.
Reports from Hazleton Pennsylvania dated October 2 indicate that a ten per cent wage increase has not reduced strife as several companies kept workers at a standstill. The number at work remains unchanged from the previous day. Overnight, six houses in the city occupied by non-strikers were pelted with stones. One man recounts narrow escapes but was not injured.
Max Wagner of the 26th Regiment volunteers was killed between Pavia and Santa Barbara Panay on October 1 during the Philippine campaign. A West Medford resident, he previously served as a lieutenant in the signal corps during the Spanish American War. The cause of death is not stated. The clipping also notes a fashion aside about short skirts making footwear obsolete.

The British steamship Eagle Point, under Capt Howison, collided with the steamer Biela bound from New York to Manchester. The Biela sank yesterday morning. all crew were rescued by the Eagle Point.

Town residents shutter doors and lock blinds for nights while constables chase a demented intruder. Descriptions match Ralph M Blood, a former Philippines soldier who escaped a Washington asylum in February. He has appeared six times, throwing objects at houses and speaking little. Local arrests follow a neighbor complaint and fines are issued. some suspects placed on probation. Police vow continued scrutiny until capture.
In a police court session lasting past noon Judge Fisher presided in Hadley's absence. Thomas Rivers faced assault and battery charges for beating his three year old adopted son. Evidence showed multiple bruises and a razor strap punishment. A probation sentence was imposed. Leonard A. Blood and Elizabeth Cleary appeared for a second time within 24 hours.
John C. Burke of Lowell writes to Joseph J. Flynn of Lawrence congratulating him on his Democratic nomination for Congress in the Fifth District. Burke pledges support and predicts success in the 1900 race, dated September 29, 1900.
In North Brookfield on October 2, 500 attendees at Grange Hall watched St Anne's faction decide whether to appoint officers and a committee to meet Bishop Beaven over the St Joseph's church dispute. The move was not approved and tensions rose as women fainted amid the excitement.
Mrs. Susan M. Gove, 77, widow of Dana B. Gove and mother of Jesse M. and Horace D. Gove, died Monday night at 61 Chestnut Street Boston, where she had been staying since her New Hampshire summer retreat. Survived by three children and a daughter Dr Anna G. Richardson. Interment at Edson Cemetery. Longtime Lowell resident.
Residents are requested to attend the Pelham sing at the Pawtucket church on Thursday with a morning rehearsal at 9 30. Dinner will be served at noon and the main sing continues in the afternoon.
The common council holds a regular session and the board of aldermen a special session tonight. The street committee meets at 7:30. Tomorrow night the overseers of the poor meet to approve bills.
State election registration began at city hall. In the afternoon 23 names were added and 52 more in the evening, bringing the total to 75. The Ayer Home patrons meet Wednesday at 3 PM. Six cars with 478 people departed from Middlesex Street depot at 7:45 AM for Lake Winnipesaukee. return trip planned for early evening.

Pickman presented the nomination speech urging unity to back tariff and currency policies and Knox’s proven record. Briggs of Woburn was named presidential elector by acclamation.
In Lowell Superior Court Judge Maynard presided as the jury returned to hear Cote against Lawrence Manufacturing after witness Fortin demonstrated fluctuating English, testified about the chimney accident, and Matthaeu’s deposition was debated. Walter Hunt described yard duties and the second fire, Matteau went up the chimney, and a plank caused Cote’s death. Court adjourned then reconvened with Cowley v Anderson and libel suit against Anderson continuing.
