In Jersey City New Jersey on November 18 thirteen Pennsylvania Railroad workers were killed and seven injured when an eastbound train struck a fogbound work crew of twenty on the Meadows east of the Hackensack river. Doctors rushed to the scene and the injured were taken to hospitals as the fog delayed the engineer and denseness of smoke and sound hid the approaching train. The locomotive that struck them arrived later amid a gruesome scene with blood on the cow catcher and a severed hand visible.
At midnight a car on the Havana to Jesus del Monte line was held up near Cristina station by a gang of robbers. Every passenger was forced to surrender valuables, then the car was allowed to continue. The site was dark and deserted with no police nearby.
Lawrence November 18 Mayor Eaton secured the mayoralty delegation at Republican caucuses defeating Dr Dow 2314 to 586 in the largest attendance ever. Edward Humphrey won the streets superintendent nomination 902 to 775 over Byron Bodwell. A delegate list was elected for the aldermanic ticket.
In Moline Illinois on November 18 Dr William P Sensibaugh a Port Byron dentist was thrown from balance during initiation into a fraternal insurance lodge. He fell onto an electric battery, received a shock and became unconscious. A week earlier he suffered a pneumogastric nerve condition and his right arm now hangs limp. Doctors warn paralysis of nerves may threaten his life.
Paris on November 18 saw three official functions of interest to American commissioners. The Queen Regent of Spain awarded the order of the Golden Fleece to President Faure through Senor Rios, head of the Spanish commission. Faure then hosted a dinner for Rios and his associates, followed by Faure receiving the American commissioners at the Elysee Palace.
In Columbus on November 18 a riot in the state penitentiary left one guard dead and two convicts fatally shot. Earlier news from Shanghai reported the German armored cruiser Kaiser aground.
A German squadron under Prince Henry of Prussia is ashore in Samsah Bay in Chinese waters. Other vessels are assisting to refloat her. It is believed the Kaiser has not suffered serious injury.
City hall hosts Chelmsford Dunstable and Tyngsboro clerks as they canvass returns in the Twenty Fifth district with changes: Quigley down 46 votes and Ames up by 3 in the Twenty Seventh district. Attending towns include Billerica Burlington Carlisle Dracut North Reading Tewksbury and Wilmington.
John H Reagan and co defendants held over for a week in a larceny case. Drunks from eight cases receive fines of 1 and 5 dollars or probation. Hannah McNamara extended to tomorrow. Kate Archibald to seven months workhouse. Lawrence Scully two months jail. Regina Bilodeau sentenced to a year at Sherborn. Sarah Pearson convicted of assault and battery and fined fifteen dollars. appeal and $200 bond for superior court.
The Vesper Country club golf team defeated Salem club at Tyne's Island by 23 to 5 in a Neighborhood cup match. Winners have held the trophy since fall 1896, will retain it until 1899. Six players per side, each pair played 18 holes.
In Cambridge Superior Court on Thursday, Mrs Augusta Steele Taylor received four months in the house of correction for illicit cohabitation. She was arrested July 3, 1895 at the Washington house with others, and after high court action she forfeited security. Her husband had recently been jailed four years for larceny.

Body to be shipped to Calais Maine. no authentic details yet. Samuel A Chase of Central Savings Bank and family plan winter in Pasadena California, leaving mid December.

Washington says the Sixth Massachusetts will not be mustered out after Porto Rico. Instead, after a 60 day furlough, the regiment will likely be held in readiness for garrison duty in Cuba. Officials note fairness to other regiments and aim to avoid discrimination.

Lowell deserters Capt Kew and Officer Atkinson testified as witnesses before the court martial for Charles Armstrong Edward McLaughlin and James Hansbury charged with deserting from the artillery. Armstrong received ten days furlough then two months as a deserter. McLaughlin and Hansbury were absent without leave or overdue after furloughs. Armstrong sentenced to one year at Governor's Island. McLaughlin and Hansbury sentences withheld pending papers to Washington. Armstrong known locally as a boxer. his last notable bout was a 15 round draw with Elmer Arnold for Hudson Athletic Club last fall.
