Sioux City Iowa reports prairie fires have ravaged Brown Bock and Dixon counties in Nebraska destroying thousands of acres of land grain barns and several houses. In Gregory Todd and Tripp counties in South Dakota the blaze threatens cattle loss as settlers struggle to contain the flames with limited success.
An official telegram from Valetta Malta reports the Emperor and Empress of Germany have sailed for Pola in the Adriatic and will travel overland direct home. The Mediterranean is colder now and the Emperor fears for the Empress health.
In Manchester New Hampshire on November 17 referees ruled against the city in the Amoskeag tax case. The Amoskeag cotton corporation is awarded nearly $42 000 plus interest and costs.
Santiago reports a corporal of the Third Immune regiment at Guan tanamo serving as assistant of free ration distribution has been arrested with three merchants for defrauding the government of large supplies of bacon and meal.
Harvard football players departed Cambridge in high spirits for the Yale clash in New Haven. Students gave the squad a rousing send off as they headed to Saturday’s game.
Post mortem exams by Prof. J W Conway of Columbia University on eight dead cattle at George Richard son farm in Macon Missouri follow 72 head purchased at East St Louis. Cattle dipped Friday and seventeen head have fed since then.
Prof. Conway calls the illness Texas fever and argues dipping had little effect besides possibly worsening the disease. Cattle involved were imported from Victoria County Texas. He advises imported cattle, after dipping, to be well sheltered and fed soft feed.
Captain Greig of Company C receives a letter from Joseph Delorme, left in Porto Rico with Privates Brophy and McGlynn. Dated Lares October 28, 1898, Delorme reports improving health after illness, plans to eat a chicken, and sends regards to the unit. He notes Brophy and McGlynn tested yesterday near Arecibo and hopes to be on his way home soon.
Ternest Ericsson, recently back from Long Island Cottage hospital, developed malaria and was transferred to St. John’s hospital. Harry Wadsworth, another malaria patient, was taken to St. John’s this morning from 25 Boott corporation.
On Friday evening Professor Louis B. Elson of the Island Conservatory of Music gave a recital on Old Scottish and bite Songs. The historic notes added depth to the performance. On Saturday sophomores hosted a party for freshmen with welcome addresses by Miss Baldwin and Miss Todd. The night featured class glee club songs and a dance in the gymnasium. Astronomy students had hoped for a meteoric shower but clouded skies spoiled the sight. Ninety meteors were later observed, yet no shower occurred.
In Cambridge Superior Court Judge Hardy presides over Joseph J. Redmund v Paul Butler et al administrators. A tort action for 30000 dollars for injuries Sept 30 1891 while Redmund worked for the defendants' testator in cartridge manufacture. Lead kettle explosion burned head face chest arms and deprived him of sight in one eye. Attorneys listed for both sides.
The Republican city committee met to finalize plans for municipal caucuses on Saturday November 26 from 1 to 8 pm across wards. They outlined ballot form and assessments for mayorality aldermen and council posts, debated legality, and approved voting secrecy measures.
The license commission report praises the liquor licensing system for reducing drunkenness and crime and urges continued operation under current rules. Francis McGlynn of Co. C Porto Rico Nursing Comrades stayed on the island with two sick Lowell men Private Brophy of G and Delorme of C while the Sixth Regiment returned home. He cared for them until they recovered and were set to sail home soon. Captain Greig commends his generosity and self sacrifice.
Mayor Bennett Supt. Cheney and Alderman Peirce found Dunn Bros again facing trouble over a paving contract on Aiken street. The specs required 18 inches of gutter coated with tar but the firm used 10 inches of asphalt. they claimed asphalt was better and were ordered to burn off the asphalt and replace it with tar.
The second evening of the Ayer Home annual sale drew continued public and manager interest. A supper from five oclock featured dainty and substantial fare while Clinton's string orchestra played in the music room. Young high school regiment members served as waiters and Winfred MacBrayne handled tickets. Unlisted helpers included Miss Lizzie Clewarth on the apron and fancy tables, Mrs. E. P. Dennis, Mrs. R. J. Butcher, and Mrs. J. W. Keyes. The Worthen Street Baptist Y the social committee hosted a vestry entertainment with readings recitations and music by Miss Ayer and others.
Rev S Darlington former Moore Street P M church pastor resigns to devote six months to evangelistic services in Rhode Island New York Pennsylvania and other states. General committee at Smith Street church Providence RI accepts resignation and he will take another church at next conference in Lawrence next May.
In Pickman Police Court today the docket included several drunks with minor penalties. Mary Harrington and Catharine Brickley received six month workhouse sentences. William J. Flynn withdrew his appeal from a sentence to the state farm. A bicycle accident near 446 Moody Street left Elzear Tremblay’s ten year old daughter seriously injured. Inspector Aflamme located the bicyclist’s home nearby.
The mayor issues a Thanksgiving proclamation declaring Thursday November 24 a day of observance in Lowell. Citizens are asked to gather for praise in church and home with a special service at Associate Hall at 10 30 a m. Returning soldiers and various veteran groups are invited, with seats reserved until 10 30. The service aims to unite the city across creeds after the Spanish American War.

Maria F Sponholtz funeral held yesterday afternoon from 40 Marginal Street with Rev C FE Fisher and the Highland Quartet singing. remains sent to Bridgeport Connecticut for burial via Undertaker Currier.

Principal C W Irish spoke on Social Ethics to students. A St Grenier of Co G 6th Massachusetts shared Porto Rico souvenirs including a two-war sword with Dr Bréton, while Corp Fred Barris and Miss Man Foss were honored in Lincoln Street gatherings.

A Wednesday evening box party by the Y P S C E in Dracut vestry featured impromptu musical selections and supper served from the box. Coffee was served by Chester Colburn and Villa Dane. The Dracut Centre school dedication is planned for next Monday afternoon with speeches by Rev Charles S. Markland of the New Hampshire Agricultural College and Junius C. Knowlton, school superintendent, plus school readings and singing.
