A group of masked men attempted a bold robbery on a Lake Shore train between Erie and Connaught at about 1 a.m. The messenger, checking express bills between cars, triggered the alarm as robbers smashed packages. The train halted after the train crew pulled the alarm rope and the men fled.
The Georgia House of Representatives, on November 16, passed resolutions calling for the election of United States senators by direct vote. The measure forms part of a Radical resolutions package that also urged free coinage of silver at 16 to 1, early Nicaragua canal construction, and opposition to a 10 percent tax on bank issues and the national war tax as oppressive and unjust.
Lebanon Pa November 16 The American Tron and Steel Mfg Co suspended operations in all puddling and rolling mills due to exhausted coal supply caused by a car famine. Fifteen hundred workmen are idle across the plant and related facilities in the state.
Gardiner Maine November 16 announced that the Maine Water company will be taken over by a syndicate led by Samuel C Manley of Augusta Arthur Bosworth of Portland and John S Hyde of Bath. The company consolidates seven water firms.
Manila November 16 Gen Hughes with parts of the 18th and 26th regiments moved from Iloilo toward Santa Barbara to press the rebel stronghold. Col Carpenter joined from Jaro but transport shortages hampered operations. Company C of the 26th fought three enemy casualties and one American wounded as Aguinaldo orders to harass the Americans circulated. Panay saw burning of San Miguel, Araneta captured at Tagbanan, and reports of an arms expedition discredited. Officers of Company C listed include Captain Alvin A Barker and lieutenants Henry M Fales and Max Wagner.
Boston dispatch reports Murphy led Collins until 11:15 PM when Collins gained and exceeded the required votes by a safe margin. Ward 19 results finalized the outcome, confirming Collins as the victor beyond the nomination threshold.
The transport Meade with the 48rd volunteers sailed for Manila at 8 this morning, departing New York on November 16.
In Marion county near Columbia South Carolina last night a four sided shooting affray left farmer John C. Sellers shot through the body and left arm and his son Ben Sellers shot in the abdomen. J D Hazelden member of the state liquor control board was wounded in the leg and his brother in law Dr H A Edwards was shot in the chest. The clash arose after Hazelden accused Sellers of writing defamatory articles about Hazelden and his life. The Sellers may die from their wounds.
Admiral Dewey and Col. Denby visited the Philippine commission headquarters but with President Schurman and Prof Worchester absent, no major actions occurred. The full report preparation continues methodically and meetings are not routinely held.
London dispatch reports Re G Parstow Daily Chronicle correspondent was shot in Market square by an accidentally discharged revolver in the hands of Lieutenant Monchison. The death occurred instantly and is attributed to an accidental discharge.
Washington November 15 the civil service sub committee detailing political assessment charges against Senator Gallinger of New Hampshire has reported to the full committee. The report contains little new evidence and the panel will likely send the evidence to the attorney general for action next week.
A seven story building at 146 State street in downtown Chicago was destroyed by fire this morning. Loss estimated at 150000 dollars. Several firemen and spectators were injured by flying glass including the fire chief.
Providence RI November 15 The campus chapel doors closed promptly at 8 40 to enforce the time limit. Nearly two thirds of the student body were barred from the exercises and gathered outside to cheer as others filed out of the hall.
The state board of charities and corrections organized in Concord with Edward J. Burnham of Manchester as president and Oliver J. M. Gillman of Alton as secretary.
In Lowell, experts testified on the value of water power and Mills associated with Tremont and Suffolk. J Hubbard Shedd valued the water power at 681513.41 with heating and dyeing not included and noted possible slight adjustments from a full examination. Other witnesses revealed mill equipment values, rents and possible savings from modernization, while cross examination explored depreciation and market prices for water power May 1 1897.
Old Bay State Chapter D A R met at Miss May Stevens home in Ty ler park on a Wednesday evening. Young members aim to spark patriotism among youth. Miss Edith Merchant and Miss Josephine Webster read papers on the opening event of the revolution. Music included a mazurka by Goddard and a violin solo by Miss Agnes Williams. Miss Alice Sleeper read The Quaker Patriot from the Capt John Ford society. Luncheon was served by Miss Stevens.

Lulu B Marsh, sought in a distressing adifra entry two weeks ago, called the Courier to announce she is alive, married, and living in Boston with a good home. She objects to publicity and asks that her name not be used again in such notices. The after-dinner speaker asserts the press safeguards liberties.
