Gen Wheaton's eastward advance linking with Gen Lawton met a strong insurgent force at San Jacinto three miles southeast of San Fabyan. The Filipinos suffered 77 killed while the 38th Regiment led the assault with seven killed and 15 wounded. American forces captured 29 rebels and 108 rifles.
Manila reports the location of Aguinaldo and his cabinet remains an enigma while leaders retreat toward Bongabong. Americans advance, likely forcing insurgents from Bongabong within a fortnight, with no safe capital in Luzon. The cruiser Charleston ran aground on a hidden reef, taking on water, crew abandoned ship, and natives aided them five miles offshore.
Gen Otis reports Maj John A Logan Jr of the 33rd volunteer infantry was killed while leading his troops against 1200 insurgents near San Jacinto. Six others died and twelve were wounded. He leaves a widow and two children at Youngstown. Son of Gen John A Logan. San Fabian prisoners sighted Logan Nov 1 at Taclac with five men. Other eight prisoners’ location unknown. Cabled Hong Kong for salvage for Charleston.
Newport R I Nov 14 The trial of men who robbed a Portsmouth streetcar crew, looted a car barn and escaped from jail before recapture, ended as John Adams James Kennard and James Maxwell pleaded guilty and received 15 year sentences. Joseph Curran got 13 years and St Paul, who pleaded guilty earlier, drew 25 years.
A Manila cable announces Maj. John A. Logan Jr. of Youngstown has died there. No details are given. The body will be brought home to Ohio.
Florence O Donoghue dies leaving Nashua street railway assistant superintendent post vacant. Citizens, ex Alderman Fred C. Anderson, and Conductor Harry Drew are among those discussed as Nashua candidates. Local patrons favor a Nashua man to calm service discontent.
James Zooras Andras Stratex George Corones and John Walsh were arrested on Market Street for charges including assault and battery. The constable complainant, acting as keeper at a store linked to the defendants, alleges they forcibly ejected him during the incident.
Reverend Samuel H Virgin longtime Pilgrim Congregational Church New York Madison Avenue and 121st Street resigns after 29 years. He plans one year rest and travel then will pursue literary work and country life in West Chelmsford. Virgin, born 1842 in North Carver Mass, Harvard graduate, previously left Orthodox Congregational ministry in 1871 to lead Pilgrim Church.
A double golden wedding was observed at 82 Union street Methuen with Mr. and Mrs. Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Barrett of Somerville celebrating 50 years of marriage. Both couples met in Lebanon N H and were honored with a reception attended by relatives from South Dakota and local friends. Mr. Parker, born 1827 in Concord NH, has served in politics and railroading and now works in insurance. Mrs. Parker born 1830 in Lebanon NH. Mr. Barrett, 71, and Mrs. Barrett, 68, formerly worked as transportation agent and now advise railroad stock valuation. their son Edward attended the event. An address by Rev Charlies H Oliphant and generous gifts capped the reunion.
Edward Simpson of 151 Franklin street Lynn cut both wrists with a razor last night and died at Lynn hospital at 12 30 this morning. He had been despondent for several days and was a member of the Lynn Republican city committee. He was employed as a shoemaker.
The 1900 plan, organized under the Courier-Citizen Company and led by Mr. E D Shadduck, promises great success. Pamphlets detailing the journey are available at the office or via Mr. Shadduck at 251 Middlesex Street.
The Tremont and Suffolk tax case resumes before Commissioner Lord with Jay M. Whitham of Philadelphia testifying as an expert on steam and hydraulic power. Whitham estimates water rights at 704,118 dollars for three mill sections and argues water power is today more valuable than ever, while cross examination questions cost, methods, and power variation.
Secretaries of the poor report the sudden death of Mrs Georgiana Webber in a wretched Lowell tenement. Her adopted daughter recounts her father Captain James W Hart of Company D Sixth Massachusetts, a Civil War veteran, and the family’s dire need as four children face bereavement with no immediate support. The eldest boy, 11, has shouldered rent and fuel duties, working at Tyngsboro's Sheriff Cushings farm and selling papers to keep the family afloat. The city pledges aid for the funeral while noting the father vanished years ago and is said to be in Bedford New Hampshire.

Edward F. Tighe an old offender was sentenced to the state farm after a Guilty verdict. Peter Miron, accused of assault and robbery on Moody street, pleaded not guilty to a common drunkard charge and faces six months in jail. Berger and Bourgeois found guilty of illegally keeping liquor and fined fifty dollars each with bonds set for appeal. Other cases continued or postponed including Jose Santos and Mary Latour.
The Lowell Orchestral Society invites patrons to obtain honorary tickets for the season featuring Miss Gertrude Edmunds. Tickets, usable for two reserved seats all season, are sold at Austin's music store and at Odd Fellows hall distribution begins Monday at 10. Beneficiaries may bid only for extra sought seats after the initial allotment, with 500 seats left for general distribution.

The case of John McManus versus Peter M. Donohoe was presented to the full bench. It concerns a contract action by a constable on a replevin bond where the plaintiff held property under attachment taken from possession by two replevin writs and bonds. The defendant contends the court erred in not directing a verdict since the plaintiff failed to connect each bond to its respective writ. J S Patton appeared for the plaintiff and N D Pratt for the defendant.
Stockholders vote to dissolve the Lowell company and create a new firm taking over the three firms. The new corporation will have capital stock of 4,500,000 dollars and will oversee Worcester and Palmer operations connected with M. J. Whittall.
