Supt H E Nowell resigns to accept a better role with the same company becoming general auditor of the system, replacing A F Walter who has left for Michigan. Nowell will office in Lynn and assume duties immediately. John S Stevens resigns as starter after seven years in Lowell and Lawrence division. John M Boles of Dracut will succeed Stevens with starter role temporarily filled. Nowell has eight years service as storekeeper and claim agent and was superintendent for about a year, living in Lawrence.
Sister Agnes of the academy of St. Mary of the Lake in Lakewood New Jersey was shot in the shoulder by John Lawler a former janitor who had been discharged for drunkenness He refused to leave and after a brief farewell he fired Lawler was arrested for the crime.
The President appointed William F. Willoughby of the District of Columbia as treasurer of the Island of Porto Rico, to succeed Jacob Hollander of Maryland who resigned. The brief dispatch notes the new appointee takes office in Washington on November 9.

Nine convicts were accounted for. two killed, two wounded, five captured. Fifteen remained at large as guards pressed Frank Thompson, the armed leader, through Leavenworth Kansas with a pursuing force of ten guards expecting captures or deaths within days.
Manila November 9 Major Waller led an assault against insurgents on Samar Island at Sijton using two three inch guns to shell and seize the position. Two marines were killed and twenty six insurgents. Waller then destroyed the quarters and seventy houses before occupying the stronghold.
Harry Gordon of Chicago testified for over two hours at the Buzzards Bay inquest into Mrs Gibbs death. The hearing, held behind closed doors, examined medical examiners and witnesses related to Miss Toppan and the Davis family. The proceeding adjourned for trains as state officers outlined a prosecution strategy. Miss Toppan appeared nervous yet composed, sharing smiles with reporters outside the jail.
Washington dispatch states Admiral Rogers cables that two privates were killed in action at Samar yesterday. Identified as George Lynch and E A Klon, the casualties reflect the latest combat losses in the campaign.
A very rich gold strike is reported under the new federal building in Helena Montana. Free milling gold worth about 20 dollars a ton is found in a vein 25 to 40 feet wide. The strike runs beneath Col Thomas Cruz's residence, a millionaire banker who two decades ago discovered a Montana gold mine later sold to the Rothschilds for two and a half million.

Worcester November 9 The jury returned a verdict of guilty against William N Kelley formerly Warren town tax collector accused of embezzling 4900 dollars of the town funds. Sentence postponed pending exceptions.
Boston grand jury returns true bill against Temple A Winsloe Alfred Newmarch William W Lord John Rogers Arthur W Joslyn and Herbert N Averill for conspiring to procure people to vote illegally at ward 21 Republican caucuses.
Washington November 9 The supervising architect for the treasury department expects Congress to raise the cost limit for the Lawrence post office or else a bill will be introduced. Officials say the project will not be abandoned and realty prices justify an increased appropriation though no final decision has been made.
Alfred Kershaw was cleaning machinery in the card room when he was caught in a belt and drawn over a pulley. He was taken home then to St John’s Hospital with a scalp wound but the injury is not considered serious.
London reports the King spending his birthday with the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales at Sandringham. No official celebration aside from customary salutes at Windsor and naval and military HQs, plus church bells.
Bangor Maine November 9 a Dayton Colorado hunter was shot dead by a companion mistaken for a deer. Game Commissioner Carleton was en route to Hol bon when Greenville guide Walter Hennessey telephoned Lily Bay that an Ohio party member had killed his fellow hunter. Coroner notified in Greenville and prosecution planned. No further details available. Lily Bay remote with telephonic link only. This may be Maine first prosecution for such an incident though prior cases were overlooked.
William Foley of Brockton, employed with a street railway gang on Broadway Street, was injured this afternoon when a paving stone fell on his foot crushing the great and second toes. He was treated at the emergency hospital.
Henry Whitely aged about 55 fell from a staging in the Lawrence corporation forenoon painting job. He landed on his side after a 10 to 12 foot drop and was taken to the Corporation hospital with bruises. Doctors concluded no bones appeared broken.
John Buckley of Lowell Rendering Co. South Lowell received a deep cut in his right leg this morning when a knife slipped while cutting bags. He was taken to the Emergency hospital where three stitches were required to close the wound.
In the sunsell court room Judge Pickman presided this morning over the case of P J Riley charged with obstructing an officer. After review of the evidence Riley was found not guilty and ordered discharged with government counsel Fisher H Pearson and defense Nathan D Pratt present.
Miss Helen Hutton, despondent over a supposed betrayal by her fiancé, used a .38 revolver to end her life in Decatur Alabama. She had been scheduled to marry a Birmingham businessman who did not appear for the wedding.
Jane Toppan, accused poisoner of Mary Gibbs of Cataumet, was arraigned in Barnstable first district court and the case continued to November 15. Judge Hopkins refused a December 4 continuance, sending her back to jail without bail.

The Buzzards Bay inquest into the deaths of Mrs. Mary E. Gibbs and Mrs. Annie G. Gordon was adjourned to resume after Miss Jane Toppan’s preliminary hearing, about two weeks away. Key witness Beulah Jacobs testified about Gibbs’s treatment and death, detailing Miss Toppan’s role and the morning after events before Gibbs died at Jachin cottage.
The district attorney pressed Dr. Lathrop on morphine or drug use by Miss Toppan as Miss Tyler corroborated little beyond Lathrop. Miss Tyler attended at the time of the alleged life attempt but added few new details about the Cataumet deaths. Mr Brigham, key for financial insight, testified about loans and how Toppan spent her substantial nursing income, closing the present inquest.
In Plattsburg New York reports say Miss Ethel Kline daughter of Col Jacob Kline 21st Infantry U S A married Capt Thomas F Dwyer 27th Infantry in Boston on November 4. Dwyer visited Plattsburg barracks on leave, retired to New York city, and telegram announced the marriage November 5. Col Kline stationed in the Philippines and the Kline family has resided at the post for eight years. Ethel Kline 19, once a student at St Agnes Albany. Dwyer 26.
Judge Fallon reviewed the Boston city registrar entry for Capt. Dwyer of the U S Army and Miss Ethel Kline. The license dated November 4 shows Dwyer age 26 from New York born in Ireland and Kline age 19 born in Indian Territory Fort Supply. Clergyman Rev Marcel Conran of the Episcopal church filed the certificate.
The Boston public grounds superintendent William Doogue harvested 1500 Sea Island cotton plants, with 500 on the Public Garden near the Washington statue. Experts praise the display as the finest cotton seen in the North, grown from Louisiana seed over two seasons. Doogue plans to ship cotton bolls to each Boston school and has sent some samples to Lowell textile school, where a small bale was processed into a pocket handkerchief.
Lowell Lincolns defeated Chelmsford 10 to 2 in a local basketball game played last night. The matchup featured the Lincolns against Chelmsford at the home venue.
In police court Judge Hadley sentenced Thomas Fennessey to eight months in the house of correction after he admitted assaulting John W. Welch. Welch testified to facial injuries and being awoken by the blows. Fennessey claimed self defense. Peter Lamountain’s counterfeit case was moved to federal authorities and placed on file. seven drunks were fined, with Patrick J. Hoar sent to the State farm with a year’s probation.

Sunday features tribulation benefits, Sunday school exercises, and a 2 30 p m rail experiences talk after 60 000 miles on the road. A special invitation goes to railroad men. Mrs Neil will sing Life is Like a Mountain Railroad. Evening services at 7 30 with a closing Friday night.
Agent Knapp uncovered plans for a long forgotten hospital sketched by an unknown designer and plans for a new stable that cost 300 dollars but was never built. The Pawtucket bridge remains closed to streetcars and no word from the railroad commission. Nine diphtheria cases were reported today, pushing the weekly total over 40.
Fire crews responded to a slight blaze in a Daly street house owned by F. D. Hibbard caused by a candle overturning and lighting the tablecloth. By arrival the flames were out. A second call at 8 30 a m summoned the department to a chimney fire behind Edson cemetery on Swan street. Damage was slight.
Geo W Bagley and his wife of Prince ton street departed for Florida this week. A child of Superintendent and Mrs J S Gillow is ill with diphtheria, the second case in the Gillow household.
