Reports from Eastcourt Natal dated November 9 describe the armored train from Colenso on return service. It carried two Dublin Fusiliers companies and engaged a strong Boer force near the line, triggering a brisk fire then Boer retreat. New York on November 8 J James J Jeffries was arraigned in Jeffer son Market police court on charges of boxing a bout with his brother Jack in a public hat. The hearing was adjourned to Thursday. For the first time since the big battle Jeffries and Sharkey met today on the stage of Koster and Bial's with Jeffries extending a hand to the sailor.
Sharkey says he is pretty well after the fight and aims to fight again when in shape. Jeffries agrees to rest, quit drinking and smoking for a year, and plans a likely rematch within a year, predicting a short fight when fit.
New Haven Conn November 8. Yale coaches conducted a stiff practice session with the varsity eleven, featuring a 45 minute open period. The College side, reinforced to 14 men, battled the varsity line with Chadwick Francis and Stillman repeatedly plunging through. Strong tackling by Cross at center and Hickok at guard helped limit gains as the varsity settled in.
In New Haven on November 8 Yale staged its first annual handicap cross-country event. A 64 mile, seven-lap course with five four-foot brush hurdles per lap tested runners. W D Waldron finished strongly despite missing a shoe for the last two laps. H P Smith of East Northfield set the fastest real time. Waldron and Adams placed second and third respectively, with Smith earning the top honor in the trophy cup named for Captain Adams.
Harvard freshmen defeated Groton School 17 to 0 in Groton. Derby and Stillman scored in the first half, with Stillman adding a 70 yard late touchdown after a false kick. Groton suffered early injuries to captain Thayer and quarterback Baldwin. Other scores include Amherst 17 over Aggie and Tufts 10 over MIT in Boston.
Princeton defeated University of North Carolina 30 to 0 in Princeton New Jersey. Mattis Palmer and McCord scored in the first half as Princeton built a lead with strong end runs. In the second half Knight added a touchdown as Shull starred for UNC and Princeton faced discipline issues.
Cambridge November 8 a bequest of twenty thousand dollars was given to Harvard University in memory of John Simpkins class of 1885 for the Lawrence Scientific School. Simpkins was a congressman from the Cape area.
An 1880s style advertisement urges spring health. It touts Hood's Sarsaparilla as a purifier for blood kidneys bowels and liver and includes a testimonial from Hakon Hammer an engineer in Pottstown Pa. It also promotes Hood's Pills as a non irritating liver remedy.
The bequest, made by the immediate family of the district's deceased, will fund improvements in the university’s mining and metallurgical laborages and department, which has been notably weak. The gift targets upgrading equipment and facilities to boost research and education in the field.
The Home Guaranty Mutual Insurance Company sends notice of an assessment on policy holders. W P Burbank, secretary, Lowell, Massachusetts, states the assessment funds a reserve and future losses, assures continued operation, and explains transfers to New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company while preserving chartered privileges. William H F Kelley was arraigned in Lowell superior court on the murder charge of his wife Theresa, July 2. He pleaded not guilty, lacking counsel, and was sent to Lowell jail pending assignment. He said he was from Connecticut and had been well treated in East Cambridge jail. The judge to appoint counsel in a few days. A separate trial for freight-house breaking in Woburn proceeded, with a sealed verdict anticipated.
A Lowell court found the defendant not guilty on concealment of mortgaged property charges. The trial extended longer than any criminal session in Lowell in several years, reflecting extensive proceedings and disputed issues.
No trace of Lulu B Marsh is found despite wide advertising in Lowell and Boston papers. She has not been seen in the area for months, with reports placing her in Tonawanada New York or Worcester Massachusetts. A lawyer said she sought proof of adoption and rights to Mr Marsh's estate, and a Rome New York marriage noted two years ago.

Edward A. Ewers of the Olympia came to Pawtucketville as a guest of the Charette family. He spoke highly of George Charette, saying he was a gunner's mate on the Machias and an exceptional sailor. He plans a possible return visit to Lowell after visiting Nashua. Ewers is a Roslindale native.

Contractor Fuller is nearing completion of the high school annex foundation, with potential spring delays if weather turns severe.
