Lowell reports a surprising Republican gain in the 25th District as Martin Robbins defeats Ingle y of Chelmsford, sending a solid GOP majority to the legislature. Hanson wins the 7th District Senate race, Dobbins defeated, and McKinley secures the 25th seat amid strong Ramsay influence.
About 600 leather workers at White Brothers and Co tannery go on strike over a wage reduction in the beam house that took effect November 1. Union leaders say most skins are smaller, lowering pay. management has not yet decided. A meeting at Central street hall supported continuing the stoppage until wages in the beam house are restored.
White said the stoppage arose from a misunderstanding he hoped to fix soon, and that the firm had not yet decided its stance. He noted the tannery employed between 500 and 600 men, most of whom were idle due to the strike.
In Lawton the Road will contest hearing was postponed as attorney George F. Richardson was tied up in a Salem case. The court appointed Frederick A. Fisher and Albert O. Hamel as administrators of Mary R. Sanborn of Westford, deceased, after objecting to Sarah F. Whitney’s petition to be appointed administratrix.
J John A Thornton jailed for drunkenness at State farm. James J Sullivan fined 1 for larceny of a trip book. Fred Livingston held in 300 bail until November 14 for illegally keeping liquor. Meyer Klarm fined 12 for using a horse unfit for work.
