This year’s car shipments of corn total 22,000,000 bushels versus 6,000,000 last year, while export petroleum trade shows an unusually heavy gain of more than 45,000,000 gallons over the previous year.
The funeral of Orrin Batchelder of Chelmsford was held Saturday at 2 PM from the family residence on Westford Street. Rev. E C Bartlett officiated, two hymns were sung by Harriet Woodworth and Alice M Stearns, and burial followed at North Chelmsford cemetery. Community groups announced upcoming events including Chelmsford Lodge’s fifth anniversary on Tuesday, Nov 23, the Village Improvement Association’s Thanksgiving ball on Nov 26, and Dr. Rix’s Friday singing school with 45 pupils enrolled.
Charles Campbell, a Lowell horse dealer, lies in Lowell General Hospital after a boulevard crash yesterday afternoon. He and his companion were driving when two racing teams collided, overturning one and injuring Campbell. His horse, valued at $600, had to be killed. Campbell suffered a torn leg and a deep neck wound requiring stitches. his companion and the other driver escaped injury.
In police court this morning Judge Hadley ordered simple drunks to pay $2 fines instead of $1 to curb Saturday night first offenders. Eighteen $2 fines were imposed as 18 offenders faced the new penalty. Other sentences include Frank Maynard and John Allen to six months at Bridgewater state farm, several men fined amounts from $1 to $20 for larceny and drunkenness, and Celia Martindale jailed four months in the workhouse.
At a Friday meeting the church voted to ask Rev. T. B. Sayer Jr to reconsider his resignation. On Sunday he withdrew it, deciding to remain in Lowell with his congregation's support. The service welcomed Rev. and Mrs. Lyons and Mrs. Monroe. Two new deacons, Eugene W. Puffer and Charles W. Davis, were elected.
At a recent board meeting Mr M G Leonard of the First Baptist church was chosen chair man of the devotional committee. The monthly devotional committee session is this evening at 730. Tomorrow the association building hosts a religious conference to arrange for the association week of prayer set for November 1649. A boys service is slated for afternoons and a men’s service for evenings with light refreshments.
L Association Catholique observed memories day with a St. Josephs church service led by Rev Fr Sirois in which 300 children sang in the choir. A second service followed in the society hall featuring band selections, remarks by President Z J Goyette, papers on deceased members by J B D Jacques, piano solos by Prof Ed Vincelette, recitations by Master Leon Choquette, remarks by Rev Fr Perron, essays by Mr Hi Choquette and Mr J E B Lambert, a eulogy by Mr Beaucage, and a poem by Mr Arthur Smith of L Etoile.
The Merrimack Valley League of the King's Daughters holds its fall convention with the Whatsoe ver circle at High Street church. Afternoon program at 3:30 features a praise service led by Thor Wardell, reports by Miss Holden and Mrs. P. A. Webb, a solo by Miss Jenness, an address by Rev. C. H. Richardson of Appleton mill has accepted an offer to become agent of the Lancaster mill in Clinton and will assume duties two weeks from Monday. The Lancaster mills are capitalized at 1,200,000 and operate 3,300 looms. He started with the Lawrence company as journeyman machinist, rising to superintendent.
A Paris despatch reports Madagascar overrun by large bands of well armed disciplined rebels. They scour the island and cut it off from the French detachment, signaling a severe colonial crisis.

The shop sits at Merrimack and Bridge streets opposite the electric transfer station, promising easy access for passersby. It will stock fresh cut flowers and offer designs for all occasions and decorations for homes or events.

The women's branch of the People's club opens with strong attendance. To accommodate demand for embroidery and fancy work, Wednesday evenings will be devoted to that branch. Interested students can join by applying to the superintendent at 2 Swan's block. The first entertainment by Miss Adelaide A. Noyes is set for Saturday night November 13 at 8. Admission is 10 cents, but students and club members may attend free.
Junior members and friends of the Y M C A are invited to an evening program in the boys room led by Rev C L Merriam. Stories will be shared, followed by popcorn and a milk social. The event is free and many boys are expected. a regular weekly social is planned.
The Hotel San Matco in Jacksonville burned Sunday morning causing about 250000 dollars in losses with under 50000 dollars insured. The blaze is suspected incendiary. Owner William Beale a Boston real estate dealer leased to McDowell and Palmer and due to open next month. A reward of 500 dollars is offered for the incendiaries. In Laporte Indiana prison Charles Pinkerton who had life sentence for murder cut his throat and died. His wife, also jailed, reportedly supplied the knife.
William Dionne, sought by Lowell creditors, reached a satisfactory settlement and the case was not pressed. He returned to Lowell, not accompanied by Inspect or Allen, who arrived too late as Dionne volunteered to face his creditors.
The S S Prince Edward of the Dominion Atlantic line reached Lone Wharf Saturday morning after leaving Yarmouth Friday at 4 p m. The ship completed the wharf to wharf haul in 13 hours 45 minutes matching last Sunday's record and logged 12 hours 40 minutes between lights. Sixty saloon passengers were aboard.
