At Exeter colliery of Lehigh Valley in West Pittston Pa seven men were killed and three injured when loaded cars weighing 11 tons, moved by engineer Price against orders, ran into the shaft top and plummeted 360 feet onto a carriage carrying ten men. Prices shifting the cars caused the disaster.
News from Samoa reports a split board of control among consuls of Germany the United States England and the two treaty officials. Rumor says the President aims to govern Samoa directly and some urge abolition of the kingship. American plans for a Pago Pago coaling station draw German protests and opposition is expected.
Berlin reports that Emperor William’s Turkey visit yielded an accord in which Germany pledges to uphold the Sultan’s Asiatic possessions and to grant commercial and industrial privileges. The arrangement is viewed as an effective armed alliance between Germany and Turkey.
Victoria, B. C. Nov 5 reports 150 sailors arrive for the sloop of war Icarius which entered commission yesterday. The flagship Imperiuse has been provisioned and stocked with ammunition and is under steam day and night. Leander stands by for service at an hour’s notice and the torpedo destroyers are all commissioned.
The Nicaraguan canal commission in Washington reports a month to finalise findings. A large technical team is compiling details and unanimously agrees the project is feasible and practical, with a completion cost of 125 million dollars.
Passaic New Jersey November 4 125 women in the Continental Match packing department strike over wage cuts. Mothers sisters and friends reinforce the picket line and about 500 women gather near the factory. The gates hold 100 workers as the strikers threaten to visit the men at their homes.
A Merrimack street department store owned by F. H. Dunmore was burned tonight with an estimated loss around 30000 dollars. The fire started in the basement and spread through the building, prompting a full local response and aid from Lawrence, though arrival was delayed. The blaze is treated as incendiary.
Fire was under control and their services were not needed. Sparks traveled along most of Merrimack street but the fire did not spread beyond the origin building. Total loss includes Dunmore's stock worth $25,000 insured, and the building owned by George O Tilton valued at $5,000 insured.
Greenfield November 5 congressmen Lawrence and McCall with Herbert Parsons state senate candidate spoke at a Republican rally. Eb B. Hail presided and introduced Lawrence as our present and next congressman. Lawrence warned annexation would threaten the republic and invite trouble. McCall likewise opposed annexation of the Philippines.

Subscriptions are collapsing since mailing costs exceed paper price and complaints grow. The 47th New York Volunteers ballots have arrived and are being distributed to companies.
The Dimes Savings bank in Waterbury Connecticut faced a run starting shortly after 1 PM Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon 275 depositors withdrew most of their funds, many seeking to reclaim money they had earlier pulled out.

Boston November 4 inventor J C Chapman aged 75 died at noon today. Born in Newmarket New Hampshire September 15 1833 he served as quartermaster and master mechanic at the Charlestown navy yard and devised many government in use machines.
Rochester New Hampshire November 4 Michael Troy a 14 year old parochial school attendant was seriously injured when a companion fixed a sharp jackknife in his seat as a joke. The blade entered about two and one half inches and doctors call his condition serious.

Thomas J Sparks longtime Lowell politician died at 9:20 this morning at his home 59 Elm Street corner of Linden after an eight day illness of typhoid fever. He was a Bartlett and high school graduate and a devoted public servant serving ten terms on the common council. He led fights against contract sewer work and secured many local improvements including a new bridge and engine house. He leaves two brothers and two sisters and was never married.
The town records multiple funerals and burials including Isaac Knup ton 62 of Bradford England died in early November with services at St. Anne's Mission church and burial in the Catholic cemetery. Kate Manning 28 buried from St Peter's church after dying at 8 Eagan court Gorham street. John J. Sharkey, Dr Jesse King, Mrs Mary C Cooper, Mrs Mary W Burgess also honored with services at local churches and burials in Catholic or Lowell cemeteries. Bearers listed for several, under local undertakers Rogers Weinbeck and O'Donnell.
A curious collection of relics and antiquities will be offered at the Trinitarian church fair to be held next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Proceeds benefit church activities and local charities.

Thieves broke into the Fred Labarge shoe store at 400 Merrimack Street last night, stealing 135 dollars and 12 pairs of shoes from a till. Entry was via the front window on Merrimack Street. No arrests or clues have been reported. The shop recently changed ownership from Myron Bros to Mr Labarge.
Company M soldiers who had marched to Camp Alger to serve in Cuba were paid by Lieut. McNulty at the Armory this morning, ending their claim for compensation.

A Boston paper reports Councillor Shaw of North Chelmsford is dying of pneumonia after typhoid fever. this is incorrect as he is recovering. Mr and Mrs N Harris sail from Boston on the for their winter home in DeLand Florida.
At the city hospital on November 4, Robert McElroy aged 28 and Joshua T. Willis aged 60. Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 o'clock from St. Anne's church.
