Advices from Asiatic Turkey report a brutal earthquake on April 29 at Melazgherd in the Vilayet of Van. The town with 2000 residents including 700 Armenians was wiped out, along with the garrison. over 400 neighboring houses fell. A milder shock was felt locally with no damage.
In Cambridge May 28 probable cause was found against Stephen J. Alphen and Robert E. Gallagher on manslaughter charges in Fermoyle's death. The court bound them over to a grand jury in $5000 bail, which was not posted. Both were committed to jail after final arguments. Fermoyle's body was found Aug 9, 1902, robbed and murdered, with the government saying they rode a wagon carrying the body to East Cambridge. The defense offered no witnesses.
Secretary of the Treasury forwarded a gold life saving medal to Captain W. H. Plummer of Millbridge Maine for heroic conduct during the September 8 1900 Galveston hurricane. He rescued upwards of 150 men women and children and acted on his own initiative giving up property and rescue work only when his boat was disabled and he swam to safety.
In Boonton New Jersey on May 28 about 150 students refused to attend classes after the school board forced the resignation of Principal J M McCauley amid local outrage.Nearly a hundred boys marched in demonstrations against the board and new principal over the dismissal linked to a letter McCauley allegedly wrote to the board president about his 16 year old daughter.
State Employment Agent Gerow reports Kansas must mobilize at least 25,000 men and 4,000 teams for the wheat harvest, based on township reports. No idle labor available, so harvest hands may be imported from neighboring states. A horse and mule shortage stems from Boer War animal exports.
A blaze at the O Dietrich and Sons pork packers plant in Allegheny City Pittsburg started in an overheated smoke house and did 100000 damage. No one was injured though several narrow escapes were reported. Insurance covers 30000.
London May 28 Lady Henry Somerset steps down from the presidency of the National British Women's Temperance Association due to ill health.

A telegram to Governor Bailey from the Labres Centre sheriff asks for a company of Kansas militia to guard J M Woods a black man jailed for alleged assault on Mrs J G Lind. A vengeful mob surrounds the jail and vows to lynch him. deputies say Woods cannot be protected much longer.
Victoria May 28 special commission of the British Columbia Legislature reports that the award of the South Kootenay lands to the Canadian Pacific railway is against the public interest.
J. E. Armstrong of 580 School Street, a worker at Hatch's box shop, injured his hand this morning while setting a coarse sawn position. The wound was dressed at the Emergency hospital with a V shaped cut requiring several stitches to close.

Savings deposits in Chicago banks have surpassed 100 million dollars, rising by more than 22 million in the past year. From 1890 to 1897 the totals grew slowly, but over six years the rise has more than quadrupled, marking the most remarkable gain in Chicago banking history aside from 1902. Even amid wage strikes last month, the deposits continued to grow.

The educated engineer with practical grounding can tackle new problems while older practitioners repeat past methods.
William H. Wright of Lawrence, MIT student, rode the cow catcher of the 9 55 p m Boston and Maine train from Salem to Lynn on a bet. He was arrested when the train arrived and charged with stealing a ride. His companion fled. Wright paid a five dollar fine.
J Lamb Doty former United States consul at Tahiti and passenger on the Mariposa says the recent tsunami disaster, while tragic, may wipe out outdated insular business methods. He notes Tahiti's agricultural resources and predicts a bright future for Tahiti and nearby South Sea islands under modern practices.
New York reports a $3,000,000 gap between Gen. Leonard Wood and his secretary of finance on American military government disbursements in Cuba. London May 28. Bilis Jeffreys, noted actress, has been granted a divorce from Hom F. G. Curzon on grounds of cruelty and misconduct. Curzon, son of the late Lord Howe, was charged with brutal ill treatment, including a blow that knocked his wife to the floor on one occasion.

Mexico City May 28 The Mexican Congress will hold a special session tomorrow to consider impeachment of Gen Bernardo Reyes governor of Nuevo Leon over the April 2 Monterey attack that left several dead. The grand jury committee favors non prosecution due to lack of evidence, making exoneration likely.
The renomination of John P. Farley as registrar of voters provoked disputes within a Democratic paper accusing him of backing Mayor Howe. Howe denied any contact with Farley between nominations and his election, calling the charges entirely false.
The Posen er Tageblatt reports a ferry boat carrying 45 children capsized on the Warthe near Dombro. The ferryman and 20 children were drowned in the disaster.

Mrs Catherine E Dowrey of 6 Warnock Street Wigginville died suddenly at home on Wednesday night aged 40. Heart trouble was given as the cause. She leaves her husband George W Dowrey foreman of the Lowell cemetery and four children, three sons and a daughter.
Waltham May 27 The Boston cotton mills will shut down tomorrow until June 1. Observers say they may curtail production later due to the high price of cotton.
Queenstown and Havre arrivals noted from New York with ships Ger manic and La Lor raine. Thompson Hardware Co offers bunting flags in sizes from three feet to ten feet.
