Shanghai May 26 Noon indications that Vice Admiral Rozestvensky has divided his fleet. Seventeen vessels of the Baltic fleet anchored at Saddle Island last night and are believed to move north from that point. Interruption of the Chefoo Shanghai cable is reported.
Philip Dolan and his 14 year old daughter Mary appeared before Judge Hadley at the police court charged with stealing a valuable gold watch chain and pin from Mrs. Mary A. Keane. Mary admitted taking the watch. Dolan claimed it found in his home. Mary was put on probation. Dolan fined $20. The session also dealt with neglect charges against Dolan’s other children and warnings to those present about resisting invitations to drink.
Philadelphia report details Mayor Weaver's grip on the veto fight over the city gas works lease. Impeachment talks surface as organized opposition presses councilmen to back the veto, with Durham Penrose consultations and efforts to secure nine additional votes to block the veto.
Boston May 26 A legislative ways and means committee reported a bill to raise a state tax to 4 million dollars from 2.5 million last year. Gov Douglas supports the measure. The treasurer provided a statement on the state’s finances and sinking funds. Chapin asked for 295,932 to cover this year’s sinking fund needs, plus 1,450,566 received yesterday from John B Cotton.
London on May 26 The Great Northern Telegraph Company says the Chefoo Shanghai cable is interrupted. The interruption does not necessarily indicate tampering by belligerents. Shanghai remains connected to the outside world by telegraph lines and two cable lines.
Portland Maine May 26 orders received by the 75th company Fort Preble and 37th company Fort McKinley of coast artillery to be in readiness to proceed next week to Baltimore to participate in the war manoeuvres.
Everett May 26 Former President Grover Cleveland drew sharp fire from Miss Helen A Whittier Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs president at the state convention in the First Methodist church. Miss Whittier praised the backlash as uniting women and guiding future work The gathering opened with welcome by Mrs Susan A Weeks and greetings from Mrs Sarah S and S Platt Decker of Denver. The group mourned the death of Mrs Mary A Livermore and elected officers including Miss Whittier as president and Georgie A Bacon Worcester vice president.

The dead body of Isabe Walters secretary of the Mississippi Cannel Coal Company was found in front of his Woodlawn home in Birmingham on May 26. He had been shot in the head and robbed of his watch and money. A revolver identified as his lay nearby with one chamber empty, indicating he fired before he was killed.
London May 26 A G Barry of St Andrews University won the amateur golf championship at Prestwick Scotland defeating Osmund Scott by 3 up and 2 to play Barry, aged 19, is the youngest player to win the title.
A convertible touring car owned by James H Mills skidded on a rear tire near the Old Lowell bank in Central street at about 9 30 this morning. Chauffeur John H Mullarkey lost a tire causing a standstill of nearly an hour before replacement and repair.
May reports from Tsingtau and Shanghai indicate the Russian fleet is assembled near Woosung with a German squadron at Kiaochou preparing for possible actions. Despatches note Russian vessels reaching the Yangtse mouth and several warships and colliers anchored off Shanghai near the SaddIe Islands southeast of the city.
Tokio reports believed diversion by Russians sending vessels to Shanghai. Slower ships may be interned while faster ones withdraw. Rosetsvensky fleet location uncertain, Togo fleet whereabouts still secret. Chefoo notes Japanese steamers arriving today held awaiting orders.
