A May 16 dispatch says Germany has dispatched troops to Haichou in Shantung and raised the German flag, prompting questions about aims. Shanghai reports doubt the landing, attributing rumors to a German gunboat surveying the harbor. The situation risks complicating the broader China and Indo China context amid ongoing war concerns.
Berlin says the claim that German troops occupied Haichou in the Shantung peninsula is false and part of a broader effort to paint Germany as aggressive in Shantung. It asserts Germany is acting only under treaty with China and has informed Washington and Tokyo. Tokyo notes conflicting Haichou reports, with one saying Germans raised a flag and occupied the town, another that they were surveying. no discussion until clarified.
The 1178 ton steamship Kilo struck a mine near Port Arthur on the night of May 11 and sank. The crew were rescued and brought to Osaka.
Nagasaki May 16 report that the Dutch steamer Wilhelmina was captured by a Japanese torpedo boat destroyer on January 16 in the Tsushima straits while en route to Vladivostok with cargo identified as cardiff.

Boston May 16. Dr Robert J Thompson formerly of Manchester NH was sentenced to eight years at hard labor in Charlestown state prison and Patrick J Gallagher was sentenced to five years in the same institution by Judge Francis Lowell in the US circuit court. Thompson was found guilty of counterfeiting bank notes by a photographic process and Gallagher of passing the counterfeit money Thompson manufactured. Both defendants were arrested by government agents after attempts to pass spurious notes on New Hampshire banks. Both appealed.
Fr Thomas J McLaughlin, ordained at Notre Dame Cathedral Quebec, celebrated his first mass at Notre Dame chapel this morning at 8 o clock in Pawtucketville. Friends and relatives attended as the altar overflowed with flowers and academy pupils sang. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Mc Laughlin of 4 Boulevard extension.
John McAdams a machinist at the North Chelmsford machine shop was scalded on the neck by steam this afternoon at the Bay State mills. He received treatment at the Emergency then returned to work.
The Lowell board of health plans aggressive measures against filthy properties. Agent Knapp warns real estate owners they may be hauled into court as warnings have failed. The board requests extra funds, saying they may be $1000 ahead now and $5000 behind by year end if conditions persist. The drive follows a meningitis scare and aims to reduce disease through stricter cleanup actions.
Dover Maine May 16 Wilbur Judkins and family were nearly suffocated by smoke and forced into the heavy rain when a fire destroyed their home and farm buildings The loss was about 3500 dollars insured for 1000 dollars The fire started from a defective chimney.
J Martin Fuller a young Augusta businessman and former suitor of Bath's Louise Twitchell leapt from a boat into Lake Cobbosseecontee. His body was not recovered that night. He had recently been jilted after Louise married L F P Baechle, an actor, in Bath. Fuller 22, son of James E Fuller, was an usher and choir member at the local Methodist church and had just started his own business.
A deteriorating cottage on Dover Street near the Lowell line in Tewksbury has become a magnet for itinerants and rowdy gatherings. Neighbors report nightly concerts and vandalism, with widespread complaints to Lowell and Tewksbury police. Town officials plan a raid and consider action at the next selectmen meeting to address the nuisance and prevent a potential fire hazard.
Bath Maine May 15 John Martin Fuller of Augusta died by his own hand shocking Louise H Twitchell Baechle, whom she married after Fuller’s engagement was broken. Mrs Baechle at her mother’s home recalls Fuller’s periods of melancholy and has had no contact with him since her marriage. She accompanied actor husband on tour, returning March 30 from New Brunswick due to ill health.
North Conway New Hampshire May 16 The Ridge hotel at Kearsarge village was burned to the ground today causing a loss of 25000 with partial insurance. The hotel was new and housed 100 guests. Owned by H. H. Dowe and Sons it occupied only in the summer. Fire believed to have started from a defective chimney used during cleaning for the season.
Dr. Boyle attended William McAuliffe, 15, at his Chapel Street home and diagnosed cerebrospinal meningitis. The teen had been a pupil at the high school.
The late John Boyle of Lowell died recently and his will dated July 8 was presented for probate. Executed by James T. O Hearn R A Griffiths and H M Bartlett the will bequeaths 100 to care for his grave 1 3 of the estate to his wife and 3000 to his daughter Bridget Crane among other gifts to St Peters Orphan Asylum the Working Boys Home and Little Sisters of the Poor. Residue goes to James Boyle and Bridget Crane. Also Emma Noyes of Westford won separate support against Irving Noyes with custody to the mother and $6 weekly support ordered. Edward W isher and F C Wright appeared.
