Milan May 9 A violent riot in Via Somtraire and Via Torino left about 300 dead and 1000 injured as rioters pelted troops with tiles and chimneys from rooftops. Troops held gates all night, artillery and infantry bivouacked at Piazza del Duomo, and press offices including Secolo were seized or closed.
President McKinley praised Commodore Dewey and his crew for Manila success and urged Congress to extend thanks to him and his officers. Resolutions and bills passed in both chambers to create a rear admiral rank for Dewey and to authorize a sword and medals with a $10,000 appropriation. No engagement news yesterday amid ongoing war reporting.
A Madrid dispatch reports Linares municipal buildings sacked by rioters. Troops fired on the mob, killing 14 and wounding 60 amid the upheaval in Linares, Spain.
Milan in turmoil as Swiss and local troops pour into the city after a night of rioting. Reinforcements arrived to restore order with authorities reporting the unrest had been suppressed by morning.
A Madrid dispatch reports that orders were sent to Governor General Augusti to resist to the death any attack on Manila. The May 9 transmission from London notes the directive as Spain faces threats to the Philippine capital from external forces.
The battleship Oregon arrived at Bahia Brazil this morning amid belief it acts under secret instructions from Washington. In Washington the President nominated Hon Charles H Allen of Lowell to be assistant secretary of the navy.
The ministerial conferences in Madrid ended without any outcome. Baker prices rise as bread costs climb one cent per loaf due to higher wheat costs. A New York report notes that the cable between Montevideo and Rio Grande de Sul is interrupted, severing connection with Buenos Ayres.
Island Lake Michigan May 9. Governor Pingree reports Secretary Alger will send the first and second Michigan volunteer regiments to Chickamauga as they are mustered.
Madrid May 9 The ministers of war and marine are organizing reinforcements for the Philippines.
Lieut. Livingston from Framingham oversees Companies C and G as they are ordered to muster at the armory tonight at 8 o'clock. Local troops respond to the call with officers directing the drill and inspection.
Lisbon reports nine Spanish vessels passed through the area heading southward yesterday, per the day’s newspapers.
George A. Clay age 88, longtime paymaster at Boston Manufacturing Co in Waltham, died Saturday afternoon at Waltham Hospital after a brief illness from an abscess. Former assistant paymaster at Lawrence Manufacturing Co in this city, he resided in Lowell and belonged to Monitor lodge F and A M, Waltham Royal Arch Chapter, and Gethsemane Commandery Knights Templar. He was a popular member of the Vesper club.
Next Wednesday the Merrimack Valley Universalist conference meets at Grace Universalist church with a 10:30 conference led by Rev. W. E. Gibbs of Lawrence followed by a 11:15 sermon by Rev. E C Bolles of Melrose and a 12 o clock dinner. A 20 foot flag will be unfurled from the church tower. Mayor Bennett is invited to attend and speak. At 2 p m praise service led by Rev J C Snow of Haverhill then 2:30 address by Rev Allen Brown of Haverhill and 3 p m address by Rev F A Gray of Nashua.
The board of health met this forenoon to address six fever cases traced to Coburn’s Coburn farm milk route in Lowell. Inspector Bates found Arthur Maddocks ill with scarlet fever, likely linked to Coburn’s dairy. The board ordered hospital care, medical examinations, barn cleaning with corrosive sublimate, udder washing, and home disinfection. Coburn’s milk supply to be halted until compliance.
Supt of Buildings W T True reorganizes the janitor staff. Four new workers start today. Jack Condon leaves the High school, replaced by William Mack of the Young Republican clubs. Torrey Stratton takes over Moody school, James Boyle moves to Moody street school, Fred Tilton succeeds Edward Mellen at the Oakland school.
A special meeting of the state council of the Knights of Columbus at Columbus hall Boston elected district deputies for the year. Growth requires 17 districts up from 13 with deputies named for Fitchburg Southbridge Webster Spencer Worcester Clinton Natick and others.
The Ayer Home board was formed Saturday under an act with Hon. Frederick Lawton as clerk Jacob Rogers as president and Major E T Rowell as treasurer joining Charles H Coburn and Dr Moses G Parker The $100000 bequest from Mrs Ayer was paid to the treasurer by executor F F Ayer enabling a substantial income for ongoing maintenance The prompt payment is praised by the Home’s supporters and friends of the institution
Soldiers of Company G Sixth regiment at Camp Dewey Lowell fear Captain Carr will be rejected by the army surgeon for deafness. Despite debt reduction, strong support from Col. Woodward and officers, the men endure a brutal night in tents with wind and cold. Some whiskey offered, calls for better clothing grow.
Col. Allen is to be nominated to the post succeeding Theodore Roosevelt, with President Long sending the name to the Senate. If confirmed, salary will be 4500 dollars. Allen arrives in Washington prepared to serve, bringing judgment and energy to the role.
The funeral for John J. McKiernan was held Sunday at 3 PM from his Lincoln Street home with floral tributes including a five foot lyre piece from his street watering department employer. Rev. Hibbert Lockhart officiated and burial was in Edson cemetery. William B. King’s funeral was at Billerica Centre with delegation from Post 42 G A R and burial sent to Taunton by C. M. Young & Co. Miss Gertrude May Varnum’s funeral was held Saturday at her parents’ Bridge Street home with Rev. Dr J M Greene officiating. Burial was in Lowell cemetery family lot. bearers were Royal Dexter Joseph Marston and Willoughby Kingsbury. The deceased was noted for Christian character and a sunny disposition.
John G. Sherburne aged 79 died at his residence 58 Dover street after a long grain business career on Western avenue. He leaves a widow and two sons Frank B and John W. Sherburne. John W. is with Carter & Sherburne. Frank B. teaches at the high school. Also noted is the death of Mrs Louisa E. Frye, formerly matron of the Young Women's home, who died in Worcester at her son Weston E. Frye's residence.
John Conway was found guilty of unlawfully taking a horse and wagon and fined $6 plus $38 for drunkenness after driving away with a Dracut man. William Fallon, accused of pocketbook theft from Emma Bourget, was convicted and jailed five months after a chase near Merrimac mills. He appealed but withdrew. Several others, including Thomas Cook and Lizzie Christian, faced minor fines while Michael H. Cutty received three months in jail.
The Recruiting Office for Company M of the Ninth Regiment sits at South Framingham camp. A recruiting office opens at the armory at 2:30 this afternoon to enlist men who must be ready for camp tonight. Capt. A D Mitten will not arrive in the city until tomorrow.
Lieut Joseph Francis of the First heavy artillery was home on a brief furlough. Mrs Mary A Owen Seaver celebrated her 95th birthday Saturday at her Lawrence home. Born in Foster Alabama she is a granddaughter of Hon Daniel Owen once lieutenant governor of the state. Skmar sie d Warren Seaver wed Barton Vermont and in 1846 they moved with their children to this city where her husband died in 1851. In 1855 she moved to Lawrence. Three of her seven children are living with her namely D O Seaver Mrs Delia A Pearl and Miss Julia Seaver of Lawrence. There are also two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
