Key West May 6 The French liner Lafayette traveling from Corunna was captured off Havana at sunset by gunboat Annapolis after attempting to run the blockade. Wilmington Newport and Morrill aided in the capture and a prize crew now holds her. Authorities believe she carried contraband and possibly recruits for Havana. The ship is a French naval reserve vessel with guns.
A May 6 Shanghai special cites Japanese dispatches on the Manila fight via Formosa. The report notes Dewey’s fleet action at Cavite and Cavite area, with Spanish casualties and heavy life loss among Spanish residents.
The U S Cartridge Co has added a six million cartridge order after already taking two million. Current capacity is 80 thousand daily, with night and day work. New machinery will raise capacity to 150 thousand per day, completing eight million total in 44 days once online.

London May 6 reports that certain powers have again urged Great Britain to intervene in the war. Great Britain has again refused.
Washington May 6 American consuls ordered to depart Spain and Cuba when hostilities begin will receive sixty days’ leave to protect them financially. The measure aims to ensure no loss of pay or status due to sudden reassignment or withdrawal from posting.
The Massachusetts training ship Enterprise will cruise Massachusetts Bay once rigged, avoiding danger of capture, with a longer voyage if an early placement occurs. Commander Andrew J. Iverson leads the vessel, a retired officer with extensive naval experience, as cadet seniors report and juniors prepare to join on the 16th. An electric car accident at Somerville avenue crossing near Fitchburg rail line left the car on its side with many bruises, one woman suffering a leg fracture and other injuries non life threatening.

Thomas Monahan was sentenced to 24 years' hard labor for the murder of Joseph Gotchee in Gorham on Oct 26 and a parallel 24 year term for the murder of William Thoits at the same time. The second term begins after the first. He must pay prosecution costs. He previously shot at Se lectman Gates, who survived.
Greenfield May 6 Katie Kendrigan 18 a senior at class 99 high school died after suffering severe burns while attempting to save her mother who was in danger. The tragedy highlighted a brave act by the student as her mother survives.
Obituaries report Mrs. Mary Jane Saunders wife of ex Mayor Daniel Saunders of Lawrence dying suddenly at home after a paralytic shock. Also listed are Betsey E Miller wife of architect Fred C Miller. The funeral for Henry Gibbons four died after diphtheria was held Thursday under J F O Donnell with burial at St Patrick’s cemetery. The funeral for Arthur Brennan of North Chelmsford who was accidentally killed was today at 9 from St John’s Catholic church with Rev John J Shaw officiating and burial in Lowell Catholic cemetery.
Miss Mabel L. Foss a Flora BE. Stacy lodge member wed Fred G. Hunton of Company G on Thursday afternoon at the bride’s home 120 Ford street Rev W A Morang of the Union Free Baptist church officiated. Hunton departed with his company for South Framingham today.
The adjourned meeting of the Memorial Day committee of the G A R posts held Thursday night in Memorial hall reviewed sub committee reports. Commanders Bartlett Smiley and McIntire with Peabody and Tuttle were appointed to interview the superintendent of schools to secure grammar school pupils for barge delegations in the parade. Chief Marshal Hayes proposed dividing pupils among cemeteries with posts for exercises. The committee will report at the next meeting. No answer from the High School battalion. Local militia unlikely this year. Meeting adjourned to Thursday May 12 at Post 120 hall.
A pension of 12 dollars monthly is granted to Alonzo L Melvin of Chelmsford who died on April 19. Charles H Frost and Elwyn W Lovejoy depart for New Orleans for about three weeks. Mrs C M Pihl and her daughter Winnifred return from South Florida after the winter. Fred F Medina returns from Belleview Hospital Medical College after passing spring exams.

The two Sixth Regiment companies paraded through Lowell amid holiday crowds of around 50,000. The escort formed at Monument Square, with bands, veterans, police, firemen, and civic groups joining a sweeping procession to the armory. A six-car special train awaited, but a crush at Middlesex Street Station forced soldiers to board where they stood as the crowd cheered and bids of farewell rang out.
Frank M. Iby of Pilling's shoe shop received a purse totaling about 100 dollars from fellow workers yesterday. He is the sole volunteer from Pilling's factory joining Company G. James H. Pearson and Henry Hopkins of Company G also received purses around 40 dollars each from Lamson's shop associates.
Michael Rooney of Stoneham pleaded guilty in U S district court in Boston to four counts of counterfeiting and uttering two dollar government notes. By agreement with counsel Daniel J Donahue of Lowell and the assistant district attorney Rooney paid costs and received a two month sentence in East Cambridge jail.
