Several hundred Italian strikers demonstrated before workers on the Muscoot dam and forced contractors’ laborers from their trenches. Police lined Broadway as 400 pickets stalked the subway route, causing iron workers to quit for lack of materials and manpower.
Semi official word outlines Erie Railroad improvements costing several million dollars. Plans include rebuilding West street pier, new ferry house linked by a bridge, a vast office building at West and Chambers, a West Twenty-third street ferry house, and accommodation for double deck boats. Jersey City gets a new station, tracks, yards, and a modern freight passenger terminal with a three track passenger line. Five ferry slips form a two level main concourse with a lower drive way and an upper foot-passenger deck. the Jersey City station becomes a freight yard.
Denver rivals Colorado & Southern and Denver & Rio Grande vie for control of the Colorado Midland railroad amid the forthcoming Moffatt line to Salt Lake. Rio Grande seeks a Denver to Midland cut to shorten travel to the coast, while Colorado & Southern moves to block the plan and threaten coal-field joint line deals to slow renewals.
Milwaukee May 5 four men including a delegate and other union members in good standing are accused by President James O Connell of the International Association of Machinists of attending the convention as spies for the National Metal Trades association. The delegate confessed to being an agent and named the three others. This was the sole item of the one day machinists convention.
Herbert Booth, son of General Booth, arrived in New York to launch a new religious venture aimed at teaching the gospel through a religious theatre. He aligns with no single reform movement, stating his project follows Zion City ties but he denies joining Dowieism.
K O C Boston May 5 250 delegates convene for the Massachusetts State council meeting led by State Deputy Joseph C Pelletier. Morning session covers credentials and officer reports with membership listed at 93625 in 762 councils, two new councils formed and a 1500 member gain in the state. A James E Hayes scholarship is funded at Boston College in memory of the late Supreme Knight.
Weirs New Hampshire May 5 The fleet of small steamers on Lake Winnipesaukee was reduced by two after the Eagle burned at Long Island wharf and the Ella F struck a rock near Birch Island and sank within minutes. Ten Rhode Island fishermen were aboard the Ella F and were rescued. the vessel was owned by R N Dana.
Baldwinsville New York May 5 Andrew ten year old son of Leonard Baldwin was killed when a shotgun charged with dry beans discharged while he played with other children at a neighbor's house. The lead struck him in the left temple and he died within hours.
Fire at the J. A. Olson picture frame factory and nearby buildings on Oakley avenue and Fulton street caused an estimated $66,000 loss. One man is missing and feared dead. Seven families fled the flames with little clothing while twelve horses perished in the blaze.
Shirley May 5 There was a large fire through the Miner property as flames from an arson barn spread to a house blacksmith shop and other structures. A train whistle failed to wake residents and two Baker family members were rescued by ladders amid dangerous heat. Fire caused damage to the Miner house and the Fitchburg division flag house along with crossing gates. Loss estimated about 4500 dollars.
Omaha Nebraska May 5 labor difficulties grow acute as Business Men's Association and striking union committees meet until 1 am seeking agreement. Several propositions were proposed by both sides, all were rejected, and it is now settled there will be a fight to a finish.
Portland, May 5. The board of trade will urge settlement of the current labor difficulties harming Portland interests. Next Monday evening a committee will seek to persuade the Federated Trades to rescind resolutions opposing the Lewis and Clark fair. A further committee was chosen to approach saw mill owners to drop their stance against selling lumber locally.
Portland and Asiatic Steamship company may bid for government transport between Portland and Philippine points. The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company freight department is also considering a bid.
Rome and Monte Cassino report the arrival of Emperor William and King Victor Emmanuel this morning. They were escorted by cuirassiers and greeted by cheering crowds as Crown Prince Frederick William and other royals accompanied them. Weather described as magnificent with a royal procession at the abbey site.
Dong Gong the Chinese leper who had remained in strict confinement at a quarantine site two miles below Jefferson Barracks for about a year and a half has escaped and is at large. Authorities vow to make every effort to arrest him.
The rivers and harbors committee of the House of Representatives conducted a inspecting tour of the navigable waterways around New York on May 5. Members of Congress from New York and nearby officials joined the tour to assess needed improvements for shipping facilities.

The Fletcher quarry strike persists with 100 workers on site. Employers say many are union members while others, mainly foreigners, are housed in new dwellings for 75 sleepers each. Union members report few have returned to work and express regret at losing such members.
London May 5 opposition to Mr Ritchies plan to abolish the grain duty united in a strong protest at a meeting of the associated chambers of agriculture. With only three dissentients the assembly condemned the policy and appointed a deputation to seek a conference with Premier Bal four. A question in the House of Commons noted miners may receive a refund of duties on imported grain when the tax ends July 1.
Vallejo California May 6 report describes a new method of using electricity in surgery. An apprentice at the navy yard, John Getegg, was wounded when a steel fragment embedded in his face. Master Electrician Petrie devised a 500 pound capacity electromagnet that lifted the metal from the wound.
The deceased in the Norwalk train collision is George Poppovise, a brick maker from Ford's Morners New Jersey. He previously worked in Berlin, Connecticut, and was traveling home when the tragedy occurred on Saturday night.

In police court Michael Gibbons was found guilty of illegally keeping liquor and selling without a license.
