On the Channel Islands run from Southampton the passenger steamer Stella struck the Casquet rocks in dense fog and foundered in ten minutes. About 60 to 100 drowned. 210 aboard, many saved in boats. Three lifeboats missing. the captain stood on the bridge as the boilers exploded.
Washington March 31 The President issued orders directing the abolition of all registry fees for documenting foreign vessels in Cuba. The move aims to enable Cubans to buy ships in cheaper markets and develop the domestic carrying trade.

In Hadley police court this morning four drunks appeared. Thomas Falett was released while Mamiulin and Thomas McCuskey were fined 1 and 3 dollars. EM Hardy, the fourth drunk, had prior records and was sent to the State farm at Bridgewater. George Frare faced assault and battery charges on Edward Leborgne. the case was continued to tomorrow. Leborgne, who had his leg broken in February, has been in St John’s hospital. Frare has been a prisoner at Lowell jail. George Marin, charged with breaking and entering Gaspard Beaudry’s house, was held 200 dollars until next Friday. Marin appeared older than ten, but his mother insists he is 18.

Relatives and lifelong friends gathered March 29 to honor the golden wedding of Adelbert Mead and Almira Hoar Mead at their West Acton home. Fifty years ago the couple married in Littleton and raised five children, only one living. Family members from Fitchburg to Somerville attended. Mead, senior partner of A. Co. W. Mead & Co., Boston, commanded wide respect for integrity and temperance.
Relatives and officials await arrival of bodies from New York for Ralph Bb. Walker and Joseph L. Wallace, with funeral plans on hold until all remain are in Lowell. William D. Ruckledge's body expected at Tewksbury tomorrow for a public funeral in Wigginville with Lowell Military band escort to Edson cemetery.
Mrs Mary D Anderson, who reported her husband’s disappearance last Saturday, says he deserted her and will move with their four children to Sheldon Conn the home of her mother tonight or tomorrow morning. She has borrowed money by pledging her effects to a local dealer who will hold them until repayment. She has not heard from him since departure and believes his parents influenced the desertion. They arrived in Lowell with five children, including a Polish girl, who is now working in a mill. One child was taken by the husband, his child by a former wife. The remaining four children belong to Mrs Anderson by a former husband.
City Solicitor Qua doubts a veteran protection section under civil service rules will reinstate two street department veterans after a hearing was held. He warns the clause may harm departments and demoralize staff. Abel Wheeler is set for re election as board of assessors chair. Clerical hires under the new ordinance will occur next month with many former clerks likely to return.
Peter Quinn, one of Lowell's oldest residents, died this morning at his home. He was born in Ireland and had lived in Lowell for many years, with his passing marking the loss of a long standing local figure.
A lifelong Salem grocer and Irish society figure, Mr Quinn leaves a son Charles a lawyer and two daughters Catherine Quinn and Mrs John H Coffey. two sons Edward B and John Quinn are dead. Mary Leonard aged 21 dies at 1 Maguire's court off Charles street. she aided religious societies of St Peters parish and leaves a mother and many friends. Mrs George W Frye wife of Deacon Frye of First Congregational church dies at 118 Prince street after months of ill health from heart disease. she is survived by a husband a mother and a married sister.
Funeral services were held for George Jones at his home on 64 Common Street with burial at St. Patrick's cemetery. Henry Kileski's services followed at 2 30 pm from 30 Hanks Street with burial at Edson cemetery. Mrs Anna M Kittredge's funeral occurred at 2 pm at 9 First Street with interment in Lowell cemetery.
