A West Third street disorderly house case is noted with Michael Connors jailed for drunkenness and sent to the State farm. Edward Shanley and John H. Dun lavey, parole men from the State farm, are held in $200 each for Monday. Martin McNally was fined $6 and five drunks at the session paid $2 each.
Boston March 28 The first day of the international cable match between American and English universities ended with a British victory in the only finished game. Americans hopeful on board No 1 as Rice of Harvard held a lone pawn edge. Bridgman’s prospects on the last board look bright while Broome has advantage over Richardson. Keeler versus Bumpass is open. Sawin of Yale sacrificed a knight in a bold line, Davidson forking the queen and capturing with a knight to force Sawin's resignation. Rice and Webb clashed with heavy piece losses. Webb failed to force a drawn continuation after a sequence starting on move 16. Sewall’s position on board 2 is weak against Bateman’s strong center.
Manchester March 28. Stark mills with 1700 workers and a $10,000 weekly payroll may be shut down as the American Cotton Duck company plans to concentrate its plants in Alabama. A visit by James E. Hooper and local agent John H. Whitten hints at disposal plans, with Amoskeag suggested as potential new owners if abandoned. High taxes labor unrest and a 58 hour law debate cited as factors.
Agent Richardson of the Humane society disposed of two horses in Green street at auction this morning. Both were ordered sent to the rendering works. The first had a broken tendon with the ankle touching the ground and belonged to a Hebrew living in Railroad street. The second, found minutes later, suffered from a Sweeney shoulder with contracted tendons.
A strike riot in Slatovsk, Dofa region near the Ural mountains, left 28 dead and 650 wounded. Slatovsk, a mining district capital, hosts iron works and a large damasked scimitars factory, with about 21,000 residents at an elevation of 1343 feet.
St Louis organizes an expo bureau to secure housing for visitors to the Louisiana Purchase exposition dedication next month. Homes, halls, and warehouses are being converted with rates from 1 to 1.50 per night plus meals. Notables offer to host distinguished guests for a fee, and the steamer Corwin H Spencer will berth 400 shipboard guests. Soldiers will have tents pitched in the woods west of the site for the ceremonies.
In the civil session Judge Hadley dismissed the complaint by Victor H. J. Bell-Isle company for possession of the Three Little Tailors store at Middlesex street. A separate assault charge against John McGonagle arose during disputed removal of goods. A damages suit for 5000 was filed against Dr. J. N. Marston, Henry W. Ordway, Victor H. J. Bell-Isle, and John McManus. Peter A. Fay represents the McGonagles and the complainants.
In Lawrence on March 28 Mayor Grant served notices of removal on commission members W. J. Bradley Frederick Patch and James A. Coughlin. The board will face a Monday hearing at 9 30 a m with charges to be disclosed later and counsel to be engaged.
Notices posted at cotton mills in the city announce noon closing and a prolonged shutdown. Mill managers say workers in several departments refused to start Monday, prompting the decision to suspend operations. Massachusetts mills, Merrimack Manufacturing, and Lawrence hosiery show similar actions with wage payment plans for the closing period. Union leaders deny final refusal of arbitration, while operatives react with concern and mixed mood as talks proceed.

About 1000 United Brewer Workers in Mahanoy City Pa walked out in a strike to force higher wages. They rejected a five member arbitration board proposed by the Anthracite Brewers Association, saying there was nothing to arbitrate.
Paris reports a noon conference between officials and the MacDonald family. A statement says the body will be moved to Scotland and requests the strictest privacy. The death is reported as self inflicted at the Regina hotel on Wednesday.
A Brussels despatch reported by the Times notes discontent in several Dutch garrisons due to excessive night sentry duty. Inflammatory language has been used, arrests have occurred, and authorities are taking active measures to curb further insubordination.

In Colorado Springs officials of United States Reduction and Refining meet Cripple Creek mine owners and businessmen to settle the strike. The plan offers to reinstate strikers by placing them in district mines, the only reported hurdle being the strikers reluctance to leave Colorado City where many own homes.
The flood spreads through Greenville as the Main street levee is abandoned and water reaches Washington avenue the highest point in the city. Relief boats are sent to Tuxedo and Race Track additions as residents cling to roofs and rafts. A woman and five children die in one house. Southern Greenville is underwater and lights are out.
