The Middlesex club held a large veterans night at the American House in Boston with Col. William M. Olin presiding and 125 members and guests. Attendees included Col. Henry S. Russell and Lieut. Col. Curtis Guild Jr. The program mixed Civil War and newer veterans with varied musical selections and a 5 pm reception followed by dinner.
The Startled Fawn, once Gen. Butler's sea-going pleasure boat, lies at the bottom of the Merrimack River in Lawrence after sinking yesterday while moored at her wharf. The vessel was converted to an excursion steamer and formerly ran between Lawrence and nearby summer resorts. Passengers aboard during a prior sinking were rescued.

Testimony covered land values and mill site comparisons near Walshs mill and Chelmsford line with varied foot prices and contractor opinions on value.
In police court today Henry W Garrity and Theresa Garrity owners of the Farragut house had their case continued to Saturday April 1. Ducharme the only drunk was sent to the workhouse for one month. Briscoe a bum was found guilty of vagrancy and sentenced to the State farm. appeal bond set at 200 dollars. Kennedy the traveling salesman was convicted of assault and battery and fined 15 dollars. Lachance found guilty of larceny and jailed two months. Lynch habitual truant case put on file.
The Merrimack Clothing Co presents the proper sort of top coats in their Spring exhibit. Sweat shop garments at odd prices have no place here. The reliable article can be had at so reasonable a price that it is not wise to invest in sweat shop products that will not endure a rain storm.
Herring-bones whipcord undressed worsted and other proper cloths are shown in various lengths with silk or serge lining. Velvet collar or same material collar finishes are shown. Hand finish ensures a permanent neck-fit. Patrons’ garments are pressed free of charge.
The Provident Life Insurance Company promises a ten thousand dollar reward at the end of twenty years or any term on record to the person who continues paying the annual premium for that amount. Judge Hadley filed the inquest report into the death of Charles W. Mayotte a Lowell tailor aged about 36 who died in the Lowell common jail on January 17 1899 from chronic alcoholic poisoning intensified by acute alcoholic poisoning. The report details his arrest on a charge of unlawfully selling mortgaged property his confinement from January 14 to 15 and 16 with repeated water and whiskey requests and humane care before his transfer to the jail where he showed tremors and a final fatal condition.
The trial of Thomas F Logue and James Dowd from Lawrence for assault with intent to kill J B Cover and robbery opened before Judge Hadley. Cover testified two men entered his store on Feb 11, identified the defendants, and described being pistol threatened and struck. Photographs of the store were challenged and ruled inadmissible.
Testimony continued with witnesses including Mr. Cover Dr Charbourne and Frank Cover son of J B Cover before an adjournment to two o clock, indicating ongoing court proceedings and prisoner arrest context.
Judge Hadley weighs whether St Joseph’s Benefit Society must pay 25 dollars in sick benefits despite by laws requiring a sworn physician certificate. The suit by Mrs Audette, wife of Louis Audette who died recently, challenges the by law as unprofessional and questions the society’s obligation to pay five weekly benefits. J C Burke represents the society. John J Harvey represents the claimant in the police court proceeding.
About 100 taxpayers met in the Hildreth building to raise the remaining 1500 for a new river bank road from First street to Varnum's landing. The project totals 5500 with 2000 already pledged by the Lowell Lawrence and Haverhill company. The balance will be deposited with the town treasurer and work to start after frost.
